Yeah, David. I believe Anne C. is just the person to direct to to the right recording so you don't get confused by the father and the son, or by the many renditions of his work — some better than others.

Anne can help.

I believe you'll find it... hmmmm.... fulfilling, maybe even inspiring. And if you don't at first, don't give up.

Anne ~~ what is the best recording of St. Matthew's Passion?

That's right, David --- Johann Sebastian Bach aka "The Master."

I have two recordings of the Saint Matthew Passion, one on EMI with *German Alert!* Suddeutscher Madrigalchor and Consortium
Musicum, conducted by Wolfgang Gonnenwein - my favorite, and one on Phillips: Rundfunkchor Leipzig / Staatskapelle Dresden, conducted by Peter Schreier.

But if you are just making your first foray into the universe that is Bach, I would start with something a bit lighter, i.e. the six
Brandenburg Concertos (utterly charming!), the 48 (Well Tempered Clavier Vol. 1 & 2) and, especially, the 1955 recording of the
Goldberg Variations by Glenn Gould.

Oh, yeh, I forgot to mention I'm an amateur Bach scholar - LOL!!

When you've listened to all those, we'll talk about the great organ works. :cool-smileys-262:

Peace to (((((Alan))))), David and all of you amazing folks!

Anne ~~ this recording (from Amazon)?

In re: EMI with Suddeutscher Madrigalchor and Consortium

This recommendation surprises me: the 48 (Well Tempered Clavier Vol. 1 & 2)

This doesn't: the 1955 recording of the
Goldberg Variations by Glenn Gould.

Hi, John -

Yipster --- that's the one!

Why does my recommendation of the 48 surprise you? How about that first Prelude in C? And the B flat minor from Book 1 gets
me where I live! Bach at his heartwrenching, sublime, minimalistic best.

Well, maybe the Italian Concerto would be a better choice. It's similar to the orchestral works in charm and accessibility. Written
during the Cothen period, with Bach at the height of his jubilant creativity.

Make mine the great organ Toccata in F (paired with a fugue in the same key by someone other than Bach, for no good
reason.)

Wow - marble fans and Bach lovers, too?!! I'm in virtual paradise - lol!

Warm Regards -Anne m_p

OMG, those '55 Goldbergs --- I laugh all the way through! FUN music, more fun with Gould at the piano! And composed at Leipzig, too. Just amazing.

Anee,

I'm going back a few posts to a question you asked. There are still seven cats left. You might have already read that by now.

I'm so sorry about yours.

I just won and paid for the experimental Daschbach marble, donated (along with MANY others) by John Ward, auctioned by Sue.
I can't wait to see this one in hand --- I love wild abstracts!

My kitty seems to be feeling better, although he still has a small dark lump on his back. To use the cliche, I'm "cautiously optimistic."

Seven cats! OMG, I hope they all find homes. I'll ask everyone I talk to if they can take one in.

-Anne m_p

P.S. If I didn't already have three of my own, I would take one myself.

Anne, I'm so happy you appreciate this marble!! I really didn't think it would get a lot of attention, because it is odd... But, as abstract goes, it's REALLY cool!! (A nightmare to describe!!! LOL) There will be a couple more of Daschbach's coming up.
I sent an email about shipping.... I'm holding boxes for those who feel they may bid through all the auctions. I'll collect payment for the marbles ONLY, no shipping, on a weekly basis, so I can forward it on to Alan... Then, at the end of the auctions, or at anytime before that, we can settle out on combined shipping... Let me know if you'd like to do this and I'll refund the shipping you've paid.
THANK YOU!!!!! :-D
(And, also to everyone who bid!!)

You are also in my prayers Cheryl, thanks for the posting updates and the care you give to Alan!

Hi all, 3 days left on the "marble for Alan" listing. I have wrestled this next part and am sure its the wrong decision. I have two family emergencies running here. One quite similar, My stepsister was diagnosed the same as Alan in July and that may be coming to a close soon. Another Emergency has arisen which will consume more time the next six months than I have to give, but I'll have too.

The way I structured the listing with the Mailings and the messages, it all took much more time and expense than I had counted on.
I am not going to post the listing for another 30 days.
I think it could still generate a couple hundred a week maybe less maybe more....I just dont have the time.

I am so pleased with the outcome that you delivered.
If anyone would like to continue the run - listed in whatever format you choose I could find the time to supply the headers and bags, and white marbles - (member - mon) just sent a supply.

This weeks tally was postponed untill the auction completes.

A Hell of a Group of Folks Here. Carry On.
David

I did just today get the Post Office to agree this is not a Parcel but a un-machinable Letter, which reduced the marble included shipping from $1.95 to .65

That would have been nice news to have 80 letters ago.

(((David)))

You have done a superb job here. I will remember you and your family in my prayers, every day.

I just can't thank you - and everybody here - for what you have done on Alan's behalf. You have proven
irrefutably that Good is a greater power than Evil. This experience has deeply impacted my world view.

Peace and love to you all.

Always -Anne m_p

Hey David, I was wondering where you'd been.... I hope all is well. And, like Anne said.... You've simply been "The Best!!"
Get back here when you can.... You'll be missed!!

Does anyone have an update on Alan, or know where I can obtain one? I've been so upset.

Cheryl's last post...

Hi Folks
again, thanks to all helping Alan with donations, cards, visits...we still have SEVEN cats to adopt out.
Alan is very very weak and very ill now. He has eaten almost nothing in 2-3 wks., and has stopped drinking his protein drinks pretty much. Still alert most of the day, so we are using him as a resource to settle out remaining consignor accts. Don't know how long this clarity will continue. We all share a love for this man, yet feel the frustration of being powerless to help. Your caring and concern, cards and messages are a comfort.

Greetings all...Alan is still hanging in there at home. He has lost a tremendous amount of weight, but is eating and drinking better than he was a few weeks ago. he has a lot of visitors dropping in and this cheers him a lot, I think. I am still seeing him 2-3 times a day and all weekends, around my work schedule. His parents are living in the apt. he fixed for them behind his house, and visit several times a day. Hospice comes over about once a week. So we will keep you posted on his progress.
On another note, Alan has decided to sell his private marble collection. his good pal Gary stern will handle the sales. we will release the seller name and dates of the first auctions as soon as they are decided.
Thanks to all who have sent donations, items and good wishes. Alan and I are keeping track of all of them so we can send thank-you notes. He wants to write these himself, but has not had the energy. But rest assured he has gotten them all and that they have really helped .
