This is most of my marble-related reference section.

Attached File  BookScan_March2007_Reduced.jpg   46.73K   80 downloads

There are three more books that I know I want/need. Greenberg's Guide to Marbles, American Machine Made Marbles, and Popular American Marbles. The last two are by Dean Six, Susie Metzler and Michael Johnson. I have heard that the must-get book of those three is American Machine Made Marbles.

I'd like to learn about other books anyone else has, enjoys, is looking for, etc. . Articles too.

Edit 1: Thank you Al for your list!!

Edit 2: I have quite a few more now. Not more than Al, but more than I had before!

AMMM is a great resource. The 3rd edition of Grist's Big Book of Marbles has some nice updates, including information about WV swirls. One of the best books I read last year was a borrowed copy of Cohill's M.F. Christensen and The Perfect Glass Ball Machine. It's a fantastic story!

Michael A. Pfeiffer's Game Marble Bibliography lists a number of magazine and journal articles in among the books.

And here's another bibliography I found online. Marble Related Books, Magazine Covers, Articles, Ads, Etc. (It's Al's website.)

This has a another bibliography at the end and much historical material discussed throughout:
A Glossary of Marble Players' Terms, at The American Toy Marble Museum's website.

I want to add a list of links to book reviews and book related discussions in various threads on the board. I'll start it here:

Miscellaneous items which struck my fancy and didn't make it into their own threads. ... or haven't yet.

The Playground, or Out-Door Games for Boys, A Book of Healthy Recreations for Youth, Dick & Fitzgerald, New York, 1866. Akronmarbles.com cites it as "one of the earliest accounts published in the United States on the arts and games of marbles". See here for a transcription of the chapter on playing marbles, http://akronmarbles.com/playground.htm.

I saw on Amazon.com that the second edition of MARBLE MANIA by Stanley Block will be coming out on January 28 2011.
They're taking pre-orders. Looks like that will be my next reference book.

Thank you! I've been trying unsuccessfuly to find a copy of the original Marble Mania for under $100 for the last couple of years -- and thanks to your post I've now pre-ordered the new one, saving myself $70 or $80 or so! Plus, maybe the price of the old one will come down after the new one comes out . . .

I have not seen the 2nd Edition yet but if the Alley Agate Company page continues to have a group of 14 marbles in a clam shell they are not Alley Agate they are Alox Agate Co. for a fact and came out of Alox Tit-Tat-Toe boxes. In many of the Tit-Tat-Toe boxes whereas there would be five marbles that were all approximately 5/8" and alike(either opaque or transparent) the other five incredible would be five different colors & designs and sizes much like the marbles shown in the clam shell. You might wonder why and I think they were just using up old stock. It really didn't make any difference in playing the game because all you really needed was for five of the other marbles to be alike and also as long as not a one of them was like any one of the other five. Confusin' as Li'l Abner would say! David

Fictional references to marbles (don't remember if I have another place for this yet so here it is for now)

A Bag of Marbles, or Un sac de billes in French, by Joseph Joffo, 1973.
