Looks like someone is trying to repeat the 6100.00 Sale??

Note Private IDs on bidder history.

At least it doesn't say "antique" or "vintage," but I doubt that would be a warning flag for some folks with more money than sense . . .

Another Fake

Yes, this is the marble I posted a few days ago further up the thread. It is the number 7 coin that Hansel had him make along with the eagle. I had one that was in clear and smaller. The base glass on this one seems a bit more obvious that something is wrong. They ususally have unfinished pontils. The green one I have has a small stub of glass where the pontil should be.

Sissy, unless it is an oriental person from Germany, I think the seller is German. Thanks for the chuckle...

Craig

Hi, Been watching this. Tried to email but I do not have an access account with eBay. I think eBay should be contacted and advised of the previous fake having been sold for $6100 + numerous 'experts' attesting to its fakeness and that another one is being offered presently.

I could if anyone wants send a Priority Letter to the eBay Investigations Unit in San Jose. They were responsive to my enquiries a few years ago.....surprisingly!

I continue to be amazed that Hansel and whoever else was involved in the manufacture of these marbles would have allowed them to be manufactured in the first place and then without some serious identification markings. It's downright criminal.

By the way, I, of course, have Baumann's book with the CA sulphide info., plus the ACRN newsletter as well as almost all of the various research effort papers that surrounded that upheaval. I still intend to do an article on the subject but have yet to convince someone to give up one of the sulphides for a Destructive Analysis by a Prof. at NYU. Still working on that.

Paul Baumann was so much concerned over this entire matter that he was passing out at the Columbus Show copies of the ACRN newsletter. The entire matter is very much contentious to this day with fairly heavy hitters in the world of marbles coming down on both sides of the issue and some of us still relatively inconclusive over it.

Gotta go. Bringing the White Fronted Amazon to the Vet for beak trimming. David

Craig, I said that because it's the way my Japanese sister in law speaks and the way my Vietnamese students spoke. Germans make different errors with English. But you could be right. And it could be an oriental in Germany. Doesn't matter, don't know why I shared that comment, sounds kind of ugly of me to notice. I wouldn't like to try German, or Japanese, or Vietnamese. I would be quite inept and whoever that person is was able to communicate and i would not be able to even make the attempt. Edna

Here's one little thing to give the seller the benefit of the doubt. Someone who speaks German and only knows a little English might not recognize the word "pontil". A dictionary probably wouldn't help them. In ordinary English a "pontil" is an iron rod used by glassworkers for handling the hot glass.

It may seem obvious to us collectors but it's a bit of a stretch to jump to the scar left on the glass when you break it off the rod. Someone unfamiliar with marbles or uncomfortable with English might not guess it.

It's a sort of marble collector slang.

The person speaking is probably using a translator program such as Babel Fish. When you put the words in it translates but has many grammer errors. I supposs that the same occurs when they translate english to their own language. They probably have no doubt its new but please dont ridacule someone on how they speak. Clyde

A definition from someone who actually works with glass.

A "PONTIL" is a mark on the glass where the "PUNTY ROD" (i.e Iron rod) was knocked off. Be it marble, dish, plate, vase, whatever.

The "PUNTY ROD" is about 5 to 6 foot long and keeps the 1500 degree glass "at arms length" to keep from burning the glass worker.

right. the glassworker's vernacular is different from what a German native would find in a dictionary and babel fish is no help at all. it doesn't try to translate the word "pontil".

From the American Heritage Dictionary for one example of what a nonspecialist would find without a specialist to set them straight -

pontil: see punty

punty: An iron rod on which molten glass is handled when being shaped and worked. Also called pontil.

No Steph you are not correct.

That is why I posted, so the people who do NOT know CAN know what is correct.

There is NO similarity between a "pontil" and a "punty".

One is glass, the other is steel.

I do not post to argue (ask Sue), but since you want to continue to press your point.....

ONCE AGAIN, YOUR WRONG !!!!!

No Bo you are not correct. Once again, you're wrong.

If the seller were to look "pontil" up in their dictionary, would they find the definition you give?

I do not think so.

This thread became about the seller's understanding of a question posed to him/her. A layman seller, whose native language is not English. The chances are very good that the seller would not recognize the word "pontil" as a spot on the sulphide.

I don't post to argue (ask me), but since you want to catch me in error . . . keep trying. I'll blow it sometime. ;-)

LOL. Sorry Sue. Don't know why Bo feels a need to invoke you. And sorry Lou. Now that Bo is ranting I'll probably leave the thread. I don't take being yelled at - or greened at or redded at - all that well. Who does?
