  1. This is my horsehair collection (not sure about the second to last one in bottom row), and my guesses as to what they are.

I'd like confirmation on the ids, if possible.

    Ravenswood, Champion, Alley, Champion

    Champion, Alley, Alley, Ravenswood

  2. Yes, by "veneered", I mean clear or translucent base with color brushed on. I didn't think any opaque marbles could be Tiger Eyes.

    So is that faulty information?

Are there any Vitros that aren't veneered, ie, have color or white inside the marble, other than Bullseyes and Phantom Conquerors? Are all the rest Tiger Eyes?

  3. Here is a marble that is clearly a Superman, using the "pure yellow vs no pure yellow" definition. But is it a Superman or a Superboy, using the other definition? There doesn't appear to be any pure red ribbons that don't also have some yellow in them, blended to create orange.

  4. Superman vs. Superboy: Orange isn't the issue so much as yellow. If it has any pure yellow, plus red on a blue base, it's a Superman. It can also have orange and I've even seen blended green: those are still Supermans. A Superboy has no pure yellow, just yellow blended with red to make orange, on a blue base. Not sure if it has to have any pure red. And if the orange is a distinct color in its own right, not just a blend of red and yellow, my guess is that it's still a Superboy, or possibly a Superteen, as I've seen some call them. :)

I don't have any problem with anyone giving new names to anything as long as they say that it's a name that they just created. Then let popular opinion decide if the name should stick. And if it already has an established name, then why not call it that to avoid confusion.

It took me a long time to see past all the names and hype, and just buy according to what I like.

  5. Great thread! Now I wish someone would do the same with Alley and Champion :)

Here are some marbles in my collection that I've never been quite sure what they are. Some, or all, could possibly be Ravenswoods. The blue/green flame/swirls on the right in the first set of photos both have aventurine. One of the blue/green swirls in the second set of photos has aventurine. Did Ravenswood ever use aventurine?

  6. If marbles are cut from a glass stream into globs, using the toothpaste analogy, wouldn't they all have two seams except for the first and the last glob? Are the MCS Pelts the first and last "globs" then? (They have only one seam, or none, right?)

How can a marble have no seams, unless it is reworked somehow not to have a seam?

Here are four more Pelts. I'm not sure if these show seams or not. Pelts seam :D to be the hardest to identify seams on, for me, at least.

  7. What is the definition of a "seam"? Does it differ with different manufacturers?

For each of these Pelts, do the pictures show the seams, and how many seams on each marble?

Does the red/green/white have one seam, or two seams that are very close together?

Does the red/orange/blue/white marble (four photos) have a seam that goes all around the marble?
