  1. I agree in part. I personally have not extended a buy it now price without asking first if one might be considered. The seller can always say no and on the few occasions that I have asked, the sellers have advised that they were not interested in doing so. My reference to unsolicited eBay offers being ethically similar in situation to flea market and garage sale offers, was to suggest that there can be (not always) a common scenario of knowledgeable buyers taking advantage of sellers who might not know what they have, regarding value. In any case, it is always a good idea for a seller to research what they are selling before excepting a non-competitive offer. If they don't have the time or understanding to do that, then a competitive auction takes care of that issue, IMHO.

  2. Getting back to the premise of the original post for this thread, eBay unsolicited buy-it-now offers are similar in ethical quandary to flea market, yard sale and old lady off the street marble show situations. So just wondering, where do you guys think the "reasonable offer" line resides for collectors and dealers? As far as an absolute auction goes (completed eBay sales or estate sale, etc.), knowledge is fair game power to exercise and I go for getting them mibs as cheap as I can. But regarding offers in any arena where I am the one eyed man in the land of the blind, as a collector (not a dealer) I try to assess value "on the fly" and extend an offer that I feel is about 50-60% of retail (depending on the venue). Truth be told, I typically err on the conservative side and overpay regarding that standard. If I made my living selling marbles, it would be reasonable (IMHO) to buy mibs at 33% retail because who knows how long I'd have to carry the mibs in inventory.

  3. Hey Marble Connection. I’m writing to share with you about a really cool marble auction fund raiser. Morphy Auctions is teaming up with the Kaylyn Elaine Warren Foundation to help kids with cancer.

For those of you who do not know me, I am Bill Warren (mibstified on the marble boards). In addition to collecting vintage marbles, I also serve on the board of the Kaylyn Elaine Warren Foundation (KEWF). The KEWF is the sponsoring non-profit organization for Kay’s Kamp, the first medically supervised children’s oncology camp in the state of Delaware.

For their April 19 & 20, 2013 Toy & Marble Auction, Morphy Auctions is accepting marble consignment donations, where 100% of the commissions and buyer’s premiums for all donated marble consignments will go to benefit Kay’s Kamp. Dan Morphy is also donating one of his prized CAC Guineas marbles for this fund raiser. Below is a link the fund Kay’s Kamp fund raiser announcement on the Morphy Auctions web site.

Kay’s Kamp is a week-long, overnight summer camp experience for children in remission or currently battling cancer. It provides a safe and special place for kids, ages 5 to 17, to escape the daily environment of hospital cancer treatment, for a week of fun and normalcy, free of charge! Kay’s Kamp is the dream and last wish of our daughter Kaylyn Elaine Warren, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in October of 2005 at the age of 17. Kay battled cancer with dignity and grace until she was cured to everlasting life in heaven on March 13, 2007.

If you would like to donate one or more of your vintage or contemporary collectible marbles to benefit Kay’s Kamp, please download the attached Marble Consignment Donation form, and return the completed form with your marble(s) donation shipment to the attentions of Serena Myers at Morphy Auctions. All marble donation consignments must be received by Morphy Auctions by February 13, 2013.

For your consideration, I have also uploaded our marble auction fund raiser flyer along with our Kay’s Kamp 2013 flyer. Please be sure to check-out our web sites for The Kaylyn Elaine Warren Foundation, www.kewf.org, and Kay’s Kamp, www.kayskamp.org, when you have some time.

Thank you for considering this opportunity to help Kay’s Kamp. Please call me on my cell or email me directly if you have any questions.

  4. Hey Dani,

The show's in July this year (as usual), right? I have not planned that far ahead yet, LOL. Do you remember the one and only time I met you and Ernie? It was at the Seattle show in 2006. We were staying in Seattle July and August, trying to get a stem cell transplant for our daughter Kaylyn at Children's Hospital. That was and still is the 2nd show I'd ever attended.. It was a great time and nice respite in the middle of dealing with "stuff".. I'll get back out there again, one of these days:-)

    Bill
