  1. Would love to see a piece of glass made prior to 500 AD that involved an alternating cane pickup. This type of technique is from the 15th and 16th century.

Toledo, Corning, and the Met display no such pieces, nor do any of the 200 plus books/ journals / excavation reports that I own on 'ancient glass.

Enlighten me please :-) I am just a humble glass maker & archaeologist...lol

...and for your viewing pleasure..an Eastern Mediterranean Core Formed Alabastron from my collection. Greek / Hellenistic - 4th - 5th century BC.

Looks like dozens to me technically. There is probably a company or two that I am missing as well.

I guarantee that there were still more marbles produced in Ohio.....clay, glass, and stone. You are talking continuous production from the 1880's till present day. Toy and industrial.

  3. It is called a "spotted dick".

    Hi Cees,

In the first photo, on the right side there are two marbles with large Black Spots on them... One of them has rings around the black spots, and one has only black spots... Now, refering to the one with only the black spots, it has 5 black spots 2 of which seem to be on the poles, and there are 3 spots around the center (equator)... Am I correct??? Can you give me any info on that marble??? I have a twin to that one, and was at a loss with trying to identify it... Thank-You Much... "Gene"

  4. I didn't find anything like that at CA in Payne. There were a few MFC experimental marbles that contained a moonie opalescent base glass like this but i do not believe they were many of them made. I have less than 3 and only a couple pieces of the raw glass. Again these were mixed with other colors.
