German Hand-Faceted Dyed Agate

I bought this one. Didn't expect it to be translucent, almost transparent when a maglite is shone through it. Is that the way they usually are? These are new to me. It has obvious faceting that looks to be done by hand.

Boy I dunno - I don't even understand how you can "dye" a stone marble - howdadodat?

Dying Chalcedony, Agate and Onyx

first involves boiling the stone in a

strong bicarbonate solution, then soaking the stone in a

chemical solution.

Red: iron nitrate solution

Green: chromic acid or nickel nitrate

Brown: sugar solution followed by heat.

Blue: red or yellow prussiate of potassium followed by

soaking in iron sulphate solution

Black: sugar solution followed by suphuric acid.

Translucent Agates are common, most of the time part of the marble. Sometimes only bands are translucent. I also have translucent handcut Onyx. Handcut Jasper I just found a few weeks ago is totaly opaque.

well I have got all of my stone agates on the auction block now - bug uns, little ones, there is a solitaire game board full of them, and one of the auctions has a hand faceted marble in it....bunches of really nice stone marbles.
