  1. I've had a few of these for awhile but don't know anything about them - which makes it difficult to describe them for selling. This one is 1" and white with shades of purple. There's only one pontil mark and a definite 9. I would probably consign something like this in order to get good pics of the pontils. Can I call it a transitional or leave that to the experts?

  2. If you ever did any antiquing or marble hunting in Pennsylvania, you may be familiar with Merritt's Antiques. I believe alot of these marbles, that they called German Sparklers, came into this country through Merritt's. Merritt's was located between Pottstown and Reading, Pennsylvania and had a Doll Museum, an Antique Shop and a huge business in Reproductions at another location.

My husband and I often stopped in at the antique shop and on one occasion, about 7 or 8 years ago, he became interested in some marbles of this type that were in a dish on the counter. The young saleslady told him she had more in the attic and went to get them. She told him that Merritt's had started in business around 1960 and they imported these marbles from Germany when they first opened. They arrived in burlap bags but I no longer remember how many were in the bags. I have also forgotten how many my husband bought but I know they he sold them to many local dealers as well as to Marblealan.

Merritt's Antiques was a huge business that took several auction companies and many auctions to complete the dispersal of their inventory. At one of their auctions I attended I actually saw a burlap bag full of these marbles being sold as well as loose marbles of the same size and type. I'm sure they have found their way all over this country and into collections.

I doubt that Merritt's was the only one importing the German Sparklers but I thought this information might be of interest. Perhaps the one who bought that wonderful sack of Sparklers will add to the story.

  3. That's why I referred to my first post on the 18th. One big lot of marbles, loaded with Akro corks and oxblood. I'm not familiar enough with Akro to recognize other than the corks and oxblood. Rather than just a couple of similar mibs, this lot seemed to have groups of the same color and unless someone can identify one of these groups as newer, I'm in the dark.

I'd love to have any or all of these be Akro. I was just going by the colors and the "V"s.

    Thanks for your help.

  4. These mibs were in the same group I posted on the 18th in Gen. Marbles and I'm just now getting to some of the other marbles I bought at that time. The Oxbloods and corkscrews in that group were easy to id but I got some strange (to me) marbles and I assigned these 3 groups to Vitro. The mibs at lower right are all plausible "Vs". The others are colors and combinations of colors that I haven't had before. The blue and yellow seems like a Vitro blue. The upper right corner is a green with light blue at the edges. 5/8 to 21/32

Are they Vitro- if so, where are they in the Vitro timeline?

  5. In the wild - in one buy- what fun! The corkscrews and oxblood are about my extent of knowledge about Akro. There were other marbles along with these and I'm still trying to identify the ones that look interesting.

The three marbles in a row seem to be the same color family - a blue and green that I couldn't place and I was leaning toward Vitro. Then I noticed that the third marble is a corkscrew. Does this mean that the other two are also Akro? They don't seem to be anything but "swirls".
