2nd Find at this historic site.

This marble was found during excavation near a home built in 1904.  The family immigrated just before the Civil War and the home owner lost a leg in battle.  Found near the foundation of a long gone carriage house.  I'd love to hear what y'all think on this one.

nice handmade German. Timeframe seems about right, these were made from about 1850s to 1910 or so.  I'd put this at the earlier end of that scale.  Nice symmetry amd pattern. Condition looks pretty good for being in the ground all these years

Post Civil War, as noted.  Pics are out of focus and too much flash, but appears to be a solid core.

Your camera keeps guessing at what you want in focus and exposed properly - so it is choosing the background.  Note how it's details are in-focus.  The flash is firing to expose the background properly, washing out the details in the marble.

Try daylight, flash off, non-textured neutral gray(ish) background and (most importantly) manual select center focus.  That will set focus & exposure.  Look at the details of the marble on your camera screen before taking the photo.
