Okie dokie. Now we're getting somewhere.
Then I'll have to vote no on the Veteran Conqueror.
Here's the version I'm reading of Alan's description of Veteran Conquerors:
So the 'veteran conqueror' is not a phantom conqueror type. The 'white' is still brushed, not filamented. But the white isn't purely white.
Also note where he says the type "has not been named but could be labeled ...". He's making a suggestion. I asked on the board about this name once and was given the impression that it never caught on. I don't know if Alan himself still uses it.
hi steph, thank for the valued info. was wondering, were there 2 marble connections lou's and alan's? thanks, jack

I looked up an old copy of Alan's page and didn't find "Victory Conqueror".
Are you thinking of the "Veteran Conqueror" name which he proposed for an off-white Conqueror variant?
sorry, i meant to say veteran
-
from what I understand the Victory is like a Phantom Conqueror only it has a clear base. It has nothing to do with the "V" pattern on them - those just make them way cool.... but having a "V" pattern would almost eliminate it from being a Victory.
sorry again, i meant to say veteran

I am not familiar with the name "Victory Conqueror".
I know what a Victory is, but that's a different marble. The "plain" Victory is the one with a single patch and a transparent interior.
hi steph, i got that terminology on alans site under vitro marbles. thanks, jack

i started a post on pete's site about debris in marbles and showed my cat with a bead in it. it was quite popular with others telling what they have found lurking in their marbles. well today while going through some cat's i found this one with a gold band of some kind wrapped around the vane. just thought you might like to see it. thanks, jack

I have to second Alan's opinion... Unless there was someone who simply recognized it, it's a tough call...
The good news is... My first thought was "Chinese." It may be Chinese, or not... But, the clean polish of the base looks better than the usual fare.
thanks for the imput sue...jack

Opinion: It appears to have a construction in the "Jetson" style - but simplified to a single ring. It is a fairly simple piece - often sold at gift shops etc. Given that it is unsigned - it could be an someone's early piece. There is nothing in the glass or the style that points in any clear direction.
thanks anway alan, i appreciate you looking....jack

Could you take pics from the top looking down and of the base at an angle, so that the texture shows??
Was there any sort of history that came with it?
got a few more pix of it. no history with it, the person got it from someone else. maybe you could just give me a guess and no i won't hold you to anything you say o.k.? thanks, jack

Is it signed?
sorry alan, i just can't find one

The largest allowed in all the tournaments I remember reading about has been 3/4". However, Vitro labelled their bags of larger marbles "shooters" in the 1938 ad below. In the 1950's they had packages called "Shooters" which contained marbles as small as 11/16" and as large as 1". (If the Shooters packaging ever contained marbles smaller than 11/16", I'm not aware of it, but I won't say they didn't.)
However, in the 1950's Marble King's idea of shooters was more in line with yours. Sometimes MK's shooters were very close to average size.
thanks very much steph for answering my question.....jack

i have been wanting to ask this question for some time now, so here goes. how and when did the phrase "shooter size" marbles begin? i played a lot of marbles in my younger days and was quite good, but no way did i ever use a 1" marble as my shooter. back then (prehistoric) the good players used agates 5/8" or a tad larger because they would stick after knocking out a marble and stay in place for the next shot. well, after reading this it sounds like a question some dumb old fool would ask, but what the heck. thanks jack

Good thinking!
that is without a doubt the coolest thing i have ever seen. 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 give or take a marble

Most Vitros do not have a "V". They come in many different styles.
Learn the basics from this post by sissydear. It has tons of pictures and information about Vitros. I don't know if there is a book that has more.
nice site but i didn't see a lot that looked like mine. i can see right now, it will be easier to just collect marbles lol. thanks, jack

that is one kick butt paperweight! I think most of us have a paperweight or two... we do!

if you look for the "v" youll miss out on a lot of marbles...whoever told you that was misinformed....while many conquers display the "v", not all do....some other styles have em but its an anomily...lotsa people collect them....lotsa jabo marbles have the trait and some have kinda a corkscrew...get ya an american machine made marbles book by six metzler and johnson....its most helpful...of the four marbles you posted the top one is a vitro....the others...jabo...
thanks duffy, never even thought about getting a book. i'll start looking for one today....jack

maybe someone could give me some advice. i am now trying to collect vitro's and get away from cat's for a while. just about every marble i post as vitro's end up something else. i had heard that all vitro's have some kind of a styl'ize V on the marble and maybe by looking at a few pics of mine you could let me know if i am on the right track.the top marble is pretty obvious but the rest ???. thanks, jack
