the formula for finding the volume of a sphere is V=(4/3)TTR to the 3rd power...V is volume,TT is PI or (3.14) and R stands for radius. this is from my son. heck, i still don't even know my times table lol. thanks, jack

Hi Jack. :-)
Right or wrong, this is what I was remembering -- not so much a controversy over California sulphides. More a controversy about modern sulphides in general.
thanks very much steph, great information

Thanks Gary! I think so too.
Note to newbies: They have a transparent base. Sometimes in pix and maybe in hand they look like they have a black stripe. But if you look closely, that black stripe is actually clear glass.
Gary's pic and Marblealan's bag have a couple of examples of that tricky effect.
here are 2 that are really different...jack

Was just looking back through Castle & Peterson's cat's-eye book last night after a Bogard discussion with David, so it's fresh in my mind - - - in there, it said only that the ones with transparent vanes (we're talking Japanese cross-thrus, not MKs) are scarcer than the regular ones, and it wasn't clear if the transparency was deliberate or not. Don't know if David can update that or not . . . David?
thanks ann for looking, i guess my vote is deliberate
-
well, at least it is for me lol. a while back i was talking to david c about transparent vanes in cat's eye marbles. told him i found a white cross thru that was transparent and i wanted to ask him or anyone, what could possibly go wrong to make the vanes transparent? but i forgot to ask. thanks, jack

in the guide to cat's eye marbles it shows (high end) 5/8" 6 vane 3 color .25, 5/8" 6 vane 3 color white cross thru 6.00 and 5/8" 6 vane 3 color transparent 5.00 so one might assume that a 5/8" 6 vane transparent white cross thru would be 11.00. i am finding a few of the transparent cross thrus and was just curious. thanks, jack

While it is styled after a Jetson-like design - in my opinion it is rather crudely formed. Lacking any artist association - it looks like someone's early work.
The size doesn't really come into the valuation until the marble, its design and the artist's execution "is there". IMO - that is lacking in the piece. With no artist association - IME the size doesn't become much of a factor.
Of course you might find a person who falls in love with it and doesn't care about these things. In that case - its just a matter of agreeing on price.
thanks alan, i guess you are right when i start thinking about it. just for the heck of it do you have any idea what the maximum size for paperweights is? thanks, jack
