yes, I would think that all authentic Guineas would have at least one seam. And yes, the barber is still cutting hair.

They also did make a few large experimental guineas. This one is 1 inch!

I've always thought on the same lines as BuckEyeDr as to the process used for making guineas. Part hand gathered and part machine rolled. We know that C.A. made hand gathered marbles, there are many examples of a swirled "9" pattern and a cut line. My guess has always been this: A glob of either clear, blue or amber was gathered from a furnace, then rolled onto a table of frit (which could vary in size, probably finer near the bottom) Then possibly reheated slightly and held over the rollers as the glob would be cut while dripping. The first cut would result in a single seam with a possible window on the end of the glob. Each cut after would result in a double seam until the process would need to be started over, maybe 4, 5 or 6 double cutlines per every single, I don't know what the percentage is, but it would be interesting to find out. This is just my best guess after studying quite a few guineas and I have no documentation to back it up.

Jack Rogers has passed away. He and Dave were responsible for the Jabo Madyia marbles. I first met him when I was asked to go down and help catch the marbles at Jabo. Since then we have shared some good times, including a 12 hour drive each way to the Amana Iowa show, if you want to really get to know someones character, go on a 12 hour drive with them! Everywhere we stopped he was handing out marbles to strangers! He will be sadly missed!

We've added a whole room full of marbles that we were consigned at the Canton show! Lots of Contemps, Akro glassware, stands, flower frogs, assorted machine mades, more original bags and low end boxes! None of this was in the original ad! But we were able to combine it with the same auction! Should be some bargains!

See what it brings, chances are someone will get burned.

Marble collectors are wonderful people, that's why I enjoy this hobby so much! Oh, sure, there are a few bad apples, but it's that way with everything. I'm sure you can't put a price on the smile he had on his face! We need to do whatever we can to promote this hobby, especially for the younger generation! We need new collectors desperately! I attend many shows, have for years, and it seems that nowdays nearly everyone is advanced and looking for the high-end killer stuff! Seems nobody wants the low and midrange stuff, popeyes, lemonades, common german handmades, they just seem to sit there! If marbles ever caught on the way comic books or baseball cards did back in the 70s and 80s, We would see prices starting to go back up again. So... give a neighbor kid some marbles, who knows, someday he may be your best customer!

Wow Joe! As always, that is an awesome report! I love the pics and details (and the humor) I'm sure it is nice, for those who were unable to attend, to be able to get a glimpse of the show. And the winking lizard was slimy, yet satisfying! Just kidding, animal lovers!

Sue, if you can get a flight to Chicago, it's just a short hop to CAK, or fly to Cleveland, it's a less than 1 hour drive south.

The show was a great success despite the weather conditions. The Hotel was perfect for a marble show, the hotel staff was the nicest group I have encountered while attending a show, the rooms were nice and clean with fridge, microwave and flat screens in every room. The hotel restaurant had good food, but if you wanted to eat at any of the dozens of great restaurants in the area, the hotel porters would drive you there and pick you up when you were ready, and they also would pick up and drop off at the Akron/Canton airport! And beyond that, I noticed the porters helping many people load and unload their vehicles! There was a nice lounge in the hotel for after hours fun, with live entertainment. Everyone who wanted, were located on the first floor, the hotel gave us the entire floor and there were no outsiders staying on our floor. There were probably 70 to 80 rooms booked total, I don't know the exact count. The banquet room was very nice, well lit, carpeted, had a sandwich bar for lunch and was completely set up for us. I don't know what else to say, except, I am going to write a Thank You to management for doing such a great job, and would encourage anyone else to do the same. This was the perfect hotel for a show, and we would like to keep it there if they will have us. Brian and I are working on trying to get this hotel for our summer show in August. The only date they have available is the 21st and I am checking to see if that would be a conflict with any other marble shows, so let me know if you know of a show in that same time frame. If we can get this hotel in August, it could very easily be the largest attended show in history! I'll keep everyone updated. Smitty

The February show has always been well attended. I thought we would loose some attendance from changing locations, but it may have actually helped with the airport and all.

Reservations are still being made, I just spoke with someone who made their reservation tonight and the hotel told them there are now over 70 rooms for the marble show!
