  1. Fascinating stuff - an area I know nothing about so thanks for sharing the knowledge.
  2. Let's do another solitaire set this week. Colourful 5/8" pinch pontil Josephs on a plain pine board. My guess is quite late - end 19th or early 20th Century?
  3. All the numbered ceramics on the Jaques' Magic Number Squares (c.1855-70) were dried on what we call trivets. They were placed so that the three small marks were on the back of the marbles. In this 16 hole set there was an error and the number '12' was dried on the numbered side (as you should see if you look carefully - one mark is on the lower end of the '1'). I always found that rather cool. My 9 hole set was all done correctly.
  4. This is my pocket pal! Always with me so I can show dealers in antique places etc what a German handmade looks like. 11/16" faceted caged divided swirl - totally beaten up but I've got a soft spot for this one!!
  5. Are these called lined crocks Ric? I've never seen one in the flesh.
  6. Time for a solitaire board this week. Its a late 19th Century boxed Jaques set with 9/16" onions. Jaques must have thought these blue pink and green onions looked good on their mahogany boards and bought lots in from Thuringen. I've had three sets with this combination and one all pink and one all green.
  7. Thanks for solving the mystery Ric!!! 'Glevum Series' on the box instructions means it was made by Roberts Bros of Gloucester 1890-1956. Major English games maker including solitaire boards - I have a few boxed examples. But sadly Clock Tidley is not a marbles board so I'll have to find another home for those 1 1/2" mibs - oh well...........🤣
  8. Just got this odd clock-face board. Its old and 11" diameter but I've no idea what it is so I'd welcome any ideas! It needed 1 1/2" mibs to sit well in the 12 indentations - so I scraped these together for the pic.
  9. Another cane fragment. Aqua mica with some its 'children'!!!
  10. Another cane fragment with 'matching' Germans. Pink onions this week.
  11. Unfortunately I don't know about the original marbles for these two boards. I have seen pictures of these boards showing micas on a Jaques board and swirls on another lighter coloured board. Can't be sure about the originality in those pictures but that's how I decided which German marbles to put on the boards.
  12. I'm stoked to have found another example of the very rare Royal Garrison Game board. I already had the 12" Jaques example on the right which I filled with micas and have shown here before. It now has a slightly smaller immaculate condition companion which I've filled with swirls. So much better than having the mibs in jars. Both boards are set up as the opening positions of the game rules. I can't identify the maker of the new one, but it has a handwritten name, presumably the purchaser or recipient of a gift, and the date 1865 on the base. Very cool - makes you think of the history of that year in the USA!! And it has the sticker of the retailer W H Cremer of Bond St London too. To have these two is a bit of a holy grail for us board collectors.
  13. Some more onionskins matched with a similar cane fragment - harder to spot it this week among the blue onions.
  14. Yes its a replica of scrimshaw ivory board made I believe from resin - I've seen this one before. I think the outside hole pattern may be to receive small pegs for the card game cribbage. There are a few different designs of these faux scrimshaw boards around - I have a couple but don't display them as I think they're rather ugly!! No idea who made them or when but there are quite a few in the UK. I wouldn't give it houseroom if it was real ivory but that's just me!!!
  15. Another attempt to match marbles to a cane fragment. I'll call this Thursday's offering Green Onions after the Booker T and the MGs instrumental. Actually I think the bigger one on the left is a Joseph but we're among friends!!!
  16. This discussion of Veiligglas wirepulls gave me an attack of the January blues
  17. I thought it would be fun to match some handmade marbles with similar cane pieces I have. Starting with some Indians.
  18. So sorry to read of your loss of a great friend.
