  1. My fave marble, a huge 2-1/8" mist Lutz antique handmade! here's a youtube video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UX4aoVI-uMI
  2. I was lucky enough to hold this amazing marble in my hands and I've never seen such a beautiful lobed onionskin (and I've seen many really good ones!). When you turn the marble in your hands it is a feast for your eyes, you almost get dizzy from the heavily twisted lobes. This marble is easily worth $10K, it's mint- as well!
  3. A major collector from Europe researched it for many years (and he has a lot of these marbles) and he gave me this info. He was able to find a Portugese collector who knew a lot about these marbles and when and where they were made. I have no documents, but I'll ask him if he has any.
  4. These marbles were made in the 1920's in Portugal by one glass family factory from Lissbon, they are very hard to find, even here in Europe (I'm from the Netherlands) and they are a lot rarer than German handmades. Some of them are very beautiful. They were never exported outside Europe, so that's why you do not find them in the US. Most of them are left twist, and the pontils are made in a different way than the German ones.
  5. Awesome! You have some mighty fine marbles!!!
  6. Yes, Vaseline glass contains Uranium (radio-active!) which makes it glow like crazy under a blacklight. I do not think it is dangerous to handle (at least I hope not!!), but I would never dare polishing one.
  7. Did any of you win (or know who has won) the large opaque Vaseline glass marble at the last Morphy Auction? it's lot 1800. here's a link: http://morphyauctions.auctionflex.com/showlot.ap?co=31120&weid=31141&weiid=11256973&lso=lotnumasc&pagenum=35〈=En I have several marbles with a Vaseline base and I would really like to know what kind of pontil this one has. It's impossible to see the pontil on these pics. Thanks in advance! You can contact me through a PM or post a reaction here.
  8. Here's a photo of 2 very large handmade marbles, the one of the left is 2" and the one on the right is just over 2-1/2". For comparison I added a 9/16" Joseph's coats. Can these still be called JC's? They don't have a base layer like an onionskin, but they have colored streaks and bands like a JC, but most of the streaks do not run from pontil to pontil like most JC's do. Judging by the bright colors they were made after 1900. Do any of you have similar marbles? Both are quite damaged (I show the best sides on the photo) with large chips, moons and cracks.
  9. I often think about him and cherish the marbles I bought from him.
  10. Here's a photo of a truly amazing handmade antique marble. A huge 1-5/8" onionskin with heavy floating lutz. The marble has a yellow base, with deep red bands on top and Lutz floating above this layer. What a marble! I'm looking forward to hearing your reactions. And I'd love to see more pics of other large onion lutzes. so please post them here.
  11. Radio's were made and used before 1923, in WW1 they used a lot of radio's for military purposes. See: http://earlyradiohistory.us/1919bru.htm so it's possible to leaflet is also from an earlier date and they made glass parts for these types of radio's.
  12. Hi Hansel, yes, you're right, these marbles were made in Germany when they no longer exported marbles to the USA. They all have bright colours (the so called 'English style') and rough pontils. They've only been showing up in US collections because of European dealers selling them on eBay etc.
  13. Thanks, Ron for posting yours! you have some of the finest examples of this type of marble I've ever seen. I also hope to see more pics from others!!!
  14. Here's a pic of 6 single pontil marbles from my collection. I love these marbles with blobs of colour! The largest is 1-9/16", and only has red blobs, on a light blue base and an outer clear casing. really strange marble. I'd love to see pics of other marbles like these! so please post them here.
  15. It's only a fracture, it has not been glued. I think it's an 'as made'.
  16. When the weather is better ( more sun!) I'll take some pics of the pontil.
