What Kind Of Marble Is This???????????

This week-end I found a very unusual marble at a collectors fair, it was part of an original antique bag of marbles with several handmade glass marbles as well as very early German machine mades (the striped transparant marbles). I've seen a lot of different marbles the past 20 years, but never this type! The size is 1-1/16" and it has a greenish base (a very wild pattern of twists in many different shades of green, a little like the early single gather or 'Leighton marbles') and on the surface it has dozens of white clouds. It does not have a pontil (maybe it has, but it has been ground down so perfectly it can't be seen anymore....). Here's the first 4 pics:

Here's a different kind of clown. Size is 1-5/8". It's one of the most beautiful marbles I've ever seen. It has a white onionskin core with green and blue flecks on it (almost like a solid core) and above that core floats a layer of 1000's of tiny streaks and dots of white, yellow, orange, red, green, light blue and dark blue and tiny pieces of mica as well! It has a highly facetted pontil and really glows under a black light, so I think it dates to 1850. It was hard to photograpgh (especially to show the core, but you can see it on the last 2 pics). Here are some pics.

Here's another pic. It's far from mint, with several small chips and moons, but what a rarity! As you can see the size 1-5/16".

It's covered in a thin layer of clear glass. It has an Indian like black base, then the lutz and blue and red bands and then clear glass. Same construcion as a black based opaque handed lutz.

OK, good idea! Here it's raining all the time...

Heavily polished...and completely ruined...

I'm sure this is an antique marble and a very unusual one!

These marbles can't be Anne Frank's....most of them are Japanese cat's eyes and they were made in the early 50's...she died in 1945...

Hi Hansel, you keep surprising me with your wonderful collection and I'm sure most of us would love to see more of what you have. Maybe you could post some more photo's of your beauties?

Yes, most certainly used as marbles, some of my large ones have moons and chips from playing, just like other marbles.

I have several Vaseline glass based and they glow a fantastic bright green under a blacklight. I've been told it's because the glass contains radioactive Uranium...I'd love to check with a geiger counter someday!

Very Strange Single Pontil Cloud Handmade Marble
JVVmarbles replied to JVVmarbles's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Yes, the base glass glows slightly under a blacklight. I've been collecting antique handmade marbles for over 20 years and I'm absolutely sure this marble is antique. -
Woooow! Hansel, that's very impressive. What lovely colors. Is the fluorescent yellow one a Vaseline glass based marble?

Very Strange Single Pontil Cloud Handmade Marble
JVVmarbles replied to JVVmarbles's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Sorry for the crappy ipad pics...the pontil is the same rough pontil as on the brightly colored English style swirls and Joseph's coats, also the colors are similar. Here's a slightly better photo of the pontil, I'll try again tomorrow in daylight.
