  1. I received this email tonight from the granddaughter of John Frier, who started Alox Agates and thought I should post it for you. "My name is Nancy L Frier and in regards to Alox marbles, my grandfather started Alox Mfg in 1919 in St Louis on Maple ave making shoelaces, the first shoelace factory west of the Mississippi. Then later started the Marble factory on Page ave in Pagedale Mo. The Marble machine is now in Dollywood. John Frier my grampa bought the marble machine from West Virgina and bought marbles first, then started making marbles, the factory ran 24 hours a day. My dad took over Alox and then they had to close the Marble factory. John Frier 1895-1974 "
  2. We've talked to Denise each day and she said that he is still hanging in there, but that it is just a matter of time. When we called this evening she said that it was a matter of minutes and that they were trying to make funeral plans amongst the family. She said that she supposed the funeral would be Friday, but she would let us know for sure after he is pronounced and they meet with the funeral home. So sad....he is as one of our family. Will let you know anymore when we know. Beth I have asked her to please let us know if there is somewhere donations can be sent to the family. I am hoping she will let us know soon. DEL
  3. I received the email which I posted in the frist part of this thread and have not heard a word since. After losing my Mother earlier this year and knowing what I went throught then, I personally have to assume the worst. There is so much to do and you get torn so many ways after a loved one is lost it can be overwhelming for sure. We just hope the best for the entire family and hope if and or when Guy goes...it is without pain and without the knowledge of what is happeneing to him. DEL
  4. Beth Morris sent me this last night and I did not see it until this morning. Hi Del, Not sure if you remember me but have had no luck posting on the board and just wanted to let you know that Guy Gregg isn't expected to make it through the night. Could you spread the word? Beth Morris Indiana Marble Club Julie and I will keep Guy and Denise in our thoughts and hope for the best. This is sad news for anyone. DEL
  5. Sami, I am very sorry for the loss of your friend. He was a great man with a true passion for the hobby. I enjoyed my time with Norm and was thankful you were able to bring him to Vegas last year or he would not been able to attend. Steve and I took Norm to lunch in Caesars, I believe it was and had a nice time as well. He was one of the most honest guys guys you could have ever met in this hobby. He will be greatly missed. Del and Julie
  6. This is horrible news. Stan was always a wonderful part of the shows in the west. He will be missed. D & J
  7. The ont thing being missed here is the fact (other than Dani and Ernie) that Akro never made "ade" marbles. What "collectors" dubbed the ade marble was nothing more than a moss agate that had a corking or swirling pattern. As the ade progressed, it became the norm that the moss agates that started a corking pattern and then shifted to a swirling pattern would remain the "ade" marbles. Saying that the marble is an ade becasue it glows does not make sense to me. Does that mean that every cork that glows is an ade if it is on a translucent base? Just curious I guess. DEL
  8. Mel was a great man as well as a huge asset to the marble community. It is a sad loss to us all and he will surely be missed by all who knew him. The last twelve months have proven to be rough on some great folks in the marble world. Let's hope it ends soon. I personally would prefer not to lose another friend. DEL
  9. Sue, Bev is surely missed. She is an icon for those that knew her and will live on forever within us. I think of her often and keep a picture of her close by. And I owe you a big one. If not for you, Bev and I would never have become friends. PS...Thinking about Wheaton with Julie...
  10. The last time I was able to spend any time with les was last year in Amana. We spent most of our time together that week and even sat up with a few others playing poker until breakfast time. At breakfast we joked about being up all night and how lon it had been for any of us doing that. I remember jokingly telling Les that this was the only way I could get any money out of him. We had a wonderful week together in Amana and I very much enjoyed Les. As has been said already, Les was a true mentor, friend and asset to the marble community. He will be very sadly missed by all. Our thoughts are with Sue and the girls and wish that there was something we could do to help. Since we know there really is not Sue, please know that you and the girls are in our thoughts and nothing but wonderful memories of Les will help us. Good-bye Les and thank you for everything you ahve done. Sincerely, Del and Julie Morgan
