Roughly How Many Colored Glass Cateyes Here.
hdale7 replied to hdesousa's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I have to dig it out but I have one vitro caged cat that has light blue almost turquise color glass and not due to reflections either. -
A few years ago picked up 32 peewee solitaires at an auction approx .47 inches or 12mm. Been looking for a board for them but are uncommon size since most boards are designed for larger marbles. If anyone knows info about a vintage/antique board for them I would appreciate the info. Probably wouldn't be cheap though. Out of curiousity sakes what is a value of a set of pee wees like this without a board. Took some pics as a group and then some by themselves. I'm trying to attach some photos. Hope it works.

Contemporary is the first thought when I was looking at it. Marbles made for the English market sometimes have different colors and designs/constructions than the traditional German Handmades so that could be a possibility as well, I believe that is what hdesousa was implying but forgive me if I'm wrong. I still am leaning alittle more towards contemporary though.

Very nice antique handmade. Rare color and unique. Great pickup.

I have some good examples but won't be able to do photos until this weekend. Vitro Hybrids and St. Mary's, uncommon colors, Peltier Bananas with aventurine, etc have the most value and can post some photos of those unless someone else posts pics in the meantime. But Cats aren't worth that much anyways. I've seen some nice Vitro Hybrids Shooters generally range from 2-10 dollars but have seen some go for more than that. I don't have many Asian ones since I don't add them in my collection but do have a few vintage Asian cats from approx 1950's.

There are several auctioneers that notify me when marbles are up for sale. The auction didn't have a lot of marbles pictured but had jars, tray of handmades with some machinemades/mostly jabo and a no 1 akro box of cardinal red marbles. Didn't get a thing. http://www.auctionzi...1721238/fp1.cgi went for 475 dollars, I thought their retail value would be closer to 350. Box in good condition for its age and marbles were near mint/near mint plus. Lost a tiny peewee handmade swirl, was approx 5/16ths, just a general design, was solid core and went for 75 dollars. I don't have one that small and dropped out at 40. Coupe older gentleman bought everything up and I know they aren't resellers because I've ran into the one guy many times and he buys up all marbles and paperweights. Even in the tray where some Jabos were mixed in with older machine mades were going for over 10 dollars a piece. I'm not a machine made expert so i don't know what some of the other machine mades were and could have had some value but nothing popped out at me. Same thing happened to me a little big ago where a bunch of sulfides, some beat up as he.l with major damage and none went under 60 dollars and most were under an inch and those that didn't need reconditioning like a bear and cat, animal figures went for over a hundred each and some of these were just good conditon. Just venting and frustrated that I am trying to collect marbles as a novice with my son and can't buy a darn thing because of the pricing. I was willing to pay 275 which I dropped out of for the Akro box. I figured if I could get it for 275 I would keep it and if cheaper maybe would resell if I bought other marbles, fund our hobby. 2 large I believe around 2 quart jars of vitro reds/mk, bunch of vitro cats with a few pelt bananas and vitro hybrid cats went for 95 each on seller's choice. Anyone else see this kind of action at local auctions. I'm about to start buying on ebay because it seems to be cheaper for me. I'm in Michigan by the way and haven't bought any marbles at local auctions for about a year because of the prices at local auctions. I hate travelling almost an hour to go to auctions and get skunked everytime. I am thinking about packing up jars of common machine mades from the 60s and making some money offering them as cosignments, lol. Am I way off on what marbles are going for lately? Just a vent and sorry but I don't post that often but I hate going to auctions with my son and desperately wanting to buy some marbles and leave empty handed.

Wanna See Multi-Colored Hybrid Cat's-Eye Marbles?
hdale7 replied to richsantaclaus's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I have quite a few Vitro hybrid cats and I find them lovely. Rich, I have the same book and the info there is kind of vague and the way they explain it is not good. The Vitro Hybrids have fatter veins and more typical of cross thrus and are generally up to 5 vanes while the later ones are much narrower vanes up to 8 or so and hug the outside of the glass more. From what I have read and heard, Vitro hybrids are around circa 1955-1965 and the caged cats are circa 1970 and later. -

Bought Some Ebay Auctions For My Bday Coming Up
hdale7 replied to hdale7's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Thanks Steph and Mintster. We are on a drought of handmades in the wild (garage sales/estate auctions, second hand shops, etc) and they get quite costly. To keep acquiring and give us more motivation on a limited budget we are going to start seriously collecting machine mades while keeping an eye out for handmades. Howard -
Bought Some Ebay Auctions For My Bday Coming Up

We (son and I) collect handmades primarily but are deciding to expand more into machine made collecting. May need some help with some IDs in a couple of weeks and hopefully I didn't spend too much but I thought I saw some interesting/potential ones in there. Maybe wishful thinking but here's hoping I made some good investments. One of the auctions had several handmades in there as well. Wife is letting me buy some marbles for my bday next week and didn't want to buy me any because didn't know what ones to buy for me. The condition of the mib in question is way off. It has major surface wear in my opinion. Looks like it has a bunch of scratches and little chips all over the surface of the entire marbles . Still a monster sized blue mica but the difference between near mint (which is how I feel they are describing it) and collectible or even a low good grade is a difference of hundreds of dollars. I have a feeling it's going to go for a lot because of the size and people not really looking at the condition.

Onionskin. On 2nd part, I've never seen a St Joseph Coat with Mica so unsure about that aspect. My curiosity is up on that since my boy and I primarily collect handmades, if they do have St Joseph Coat with Mica I'd love to see a pic if someone has one.

Beautiful collection of Lutzes. What a spectrum of styles and color variations. Thanks for showing them.

Does Anybody Please Have Some Marble Dislpay Cases?
hdale7 replied to Rylee Burch's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Have you looked on Ebay? I've looked at these in the past but have never purchased them. Still trying to make my own when I have the time, lol. http://www.ebay.com/itm/OAK-small-MARBLE-1-2-9-16-DISPLAY-CASE-HOLDS-189-/380402951002?pt=Marbles&hash=item5891c8635a#ht_500wt_1287 http://www.ebay.com/itm/OAK-MARBLE-DISPLAY-CASE-HOLDS-117-LOGO-1-INCH-/380265726699?pt=Marbles&hash=item58899a82eb#ht_500wt_1156 -
Getting Frustrated With Grading Marbles
hdale7 replied to hdale7's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Points well taken. But for example, people like me who only only collect handmades for a couple of years and wants to sell some so I can buy more and haven't attended a show yet, you have to start somewhere in grading. I use that site and take it seriously like it's a bible or something. I list every flaw I see so that the person knows what they would be getting. Photos don't show everything but it's tempting to perceive what you feel is improper grading by looking at the photos/description and think if they consider that this grade and you see others doing it, to bump yours up because maybe you grade too hard. If you don't mind, I have some photos in the buy/sell area and they aren't good, getting new camera on Friday and can upgrade the photos, what you would grade them with my descriptions and photos. I know it's not in hand and the photos aren't the best but I think nr mint - is the fair grading for the clambroths. I also have a few others in that thread. Until I hit that show in Kokomo I appreciate the help and feedback. I'm trying to learn and be honest in grading no matter what others do. -
One Of The Neatest Gifts Ever!!!
hdale7 replied to skycollect's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I just wish my wife understood my handmade obsession and would give me stuff marble related. That is really nice and beautiful. -
I use Marble Alan's site for grading conditions. I'm researching and watching similar mibs on Ebay so I know what to start them out at on Sunday and I'm about ready to pull my hair out. Especially in the clambroth category. A few from a certain seller say Mint and I can see very minimal damage/wear in the photos. Another seller is using good and near mint minus and has the most listed, several. How can this be good condition? http://cgi.ebay.com/Clambroth-Rare-Handmade-Marble-Germany-9-10-Inch-S236-/160506467787?pt=Marbles&hash=item255eee55cb#ht_7598wt_1136 No matter how you look at it neither side is near mint. How is this near mint minus: http://cgi.ebay.com/Clambroth-Rare-Handmade-Marble-Germany-3-4-Inch-S239-/140478340629?pt=Marbles&hash=item20b5295e15#ht_6544wt_1136 I see bruises, large chip, bunch of fractures. Oh well, just venting and after viewing how other people grade and I'm trying to go by an ethical standard and use 10x loupe I'll just list my clambroths as near mint minus though I feel in comparison to how all the other clambroths are graded on ebay I should use near mint plus. If the person is a member here or reads this, I'm sorry but your grading sucks. How do others grade here? Do you intentionally grade to be on the safe side like I do, super exact and maybe have to deal with someone who isn't happy with your grading even if you are in the right, or push the envelope since people seem to like the words, mint?

Went To The Auction, Bought Some Nice Mibs And Lost Some
hdale7 replied to hdale7's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Onionskin. If you are looking at the farthest bottom marble at 6 oclock which is a solid core peppermint, white and blue and if you look directly above it, that is the one I believe you are talking about. -
Went To The Auction, Bought Some Nice Mibs And Lost Some
hdale7 replied to hdale7's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Howie wanted me to post his favorites, these are all keepers for us. I thought 55 was a pretty good deal when you added them all up together just for these lots. 31 pee wees that are about .48 inch. Large 1.25in solid core. 7/8ths divided core. 1 blue based glass that is a hair over 3/4's and then a 5/8ths latticino core in there as well . Will be needing help with ID's on some machinemades and will post later in the id thread. We had a blast. -
Newer in my opinion. No fading or wear that I can see.

Went To The Auction, Bought Some Nice Mibs And Lost Some
hdale7 replied to hdale7's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
It was me against another guy on both in 25 increments. He got the slags for 325 and I didn't want to go to 350. From my research I think they are only worth about 500 but could be way off. I don't really collect machine mades like handmades. Akro corkscrews went for 125. Wife would kill me if I spent too much but would have liked to have went to 350 on the slags. It sucked because was 10 percent buyers premium plus 6 percent Michigan sales tax as well. -
Kind of disappointed lost out on box of 100 Akro slags, bowed out at 300. Bowed out at 100 on 20 count gift box of Akro Corks. Bowed out on a 1 inch sulfide dog at 45 but I don't believe it was antique, it just didn't look right to me so didn't want to risk it. The marbles were all in a glass case and in baggies so didn't get to examine everything that well. Will post pics later today or tomorrow of what was won and what may be up for sale. I got the cutest 31 pee wee swirls (latticino/solid core/everything imaginable) and is Howie's favorites, nice 1 inch German solid core swirl, etc. Just had a great time. For a preview I won everything marble related except the 2 akro boxes and the sulfide. http://www.auctionzip.com/cgi-bin/photopanel.cgi?listingid=1045776&category=0&zip=49058&kwd=marbles Howard

today is snow day and no school. thank you for the his and friends. i like your marble it looks like the usa flag. my dad says we should go to kokkomo show. it is more close to our house. he says it is like 2 hours and half hour. i might get to go to marble auction in few days with dad. tell boys and ethan i say hi and we have the same age of 8. thank you for the hellos and stuff. howie I just want to say thank you to all those who have welcomed him and we plan on attending Kokomo for our first show. To get our feet wet so to speak and is a few hours closer than Canton. I understand that most spend a few nights at shows beforehand but we'll probably go down the day before of the show. I'm sure I'll have more specific questions when the time is nearer. He normally capitalizes when writing with pencil but on the keyboard its chicken pecking for him and not worrying about holding the shift key down, etc. He's a talker and we both can get some good advice from knowledgeable marble collectors and can make friends with putting faces to the names.
