Allright, many thanks. Great info. That makes it clear to me, i was always under the wrong impression of what a transitional was.

One last thing. There are American transitionals? From a bit earlier time?

The question that you added ... I don't know how to answer it.   American handgathered slags could be called transitionals, but aren't.

If there are American marbles currently known as transitionals, I'm unaware of them.

  2. Transitional refers to being handgathered and machine-rounded.  Not a transition to another style of marble.

Handgathered American slags could be called transitional, but for some reason we tend to leave the transitional name for the Japanese ones which are basically the same style of marble as the American slags.

In my mind I estimate 1930's for the Japanese version, but that's an old estimate I adopted a long time ago.  I understand there is new research that may give more precise answers. Maybe someone can link that up for you.

  3. Sunset does seem to be a good possibility.

It might be one of those first generation versus second generation situations.   That is, whether the color is below the surface in a way that could pass for Master or whether it's on the surface in a way that looks blatantly foreign.

The GOOD, The BAD , The UGLY & The FAKE: An example of those felt marker "fakes" the seller has several different ones for sale, I think they have their second grader doing the official artwork ?? A heads up for any newbie, these are 100% "fakes" drawn on clays w/ a felt marker.

    :( Ugh.

Looked at their completed listings and they've made quite a lot of money on these.  :(

  5. I have no one.  I just hope things are labelled well enough by that time for someone else to be able to dispose of them well.

I do have a few small family heirlooms that I'm hoping to send on soonish.  Sadly,  I've forgotten things my mother told me a thousand times.  Things I didn't think I needed to write down 20 or 30 years ago are gone from my head now.  That little 1800's dress I've been meaning to send on to one of my brother's children?  All I can say now is that it's from my mother's side of the family even though she told me many times exactly which great great grandparent it used to belong to.

First of all, “Liver and Onions” sounds like a good name for an Alley Agate marble for some reason
Second of all, it has been a while since I had liver and onions and I am getting a massive hankering for some. Back in the day we would have deep fried chicken livers on card night. It is hard to find any decent chicken livers anymore though. Venison liver, pork liver, beef liver, I was raised eating them all---Yum!
    Liver –On!!

High Five to Art for turning this into a marble thread!  Good man!
