  1. Yes Ann. Ribbons on Clear Rainbos are not as strong or opaque as earlier Fruit Cocktails and thin out to different shades. They are also more on the surface while Fruit Cocktail ribbons go deep into the marble. I have to take back 6 ribbon statement Ric brought up though. Fruit Cocktails have only 4 ribbons just like a bumble bee or tiger would have, but all ribbons have different colors. 3 color Cocktails have one same color in two ribbons.

  2. Hi Steve, until recently I was believing Christensen guineas, striped opaques and transparents have to have a cutline. Only swirls would not have any. Couple months ago I was visiting an old friend and was looking his exceptional collection and found a high end Guinea that is a perfect match to two I have in my collection. This marble had no cut lines. I looked carefully with a loupe to see if it was polished and it wasn't. It had only some minor wrinkles at a small area. The examples in my collection both have a single cutline. My conclusion is, which may be totally wrong, some early Christensen agates might not show any cutline whatsoever. Very rarely seen and might mean hand gathered some sort. FWIW

  3. Both the room trading and the show itself was as good as I have been to any Vegas show if not better. Lee, Ernie and Dani were exceptional hosts as always. There were great marbles to be found throughout the show, including great last minute deals. A gorgeous couple of early Akro Agate boxes showed up at the show. Many walk ins brought many marbles to be appraised during the show. It was great to spend good times with friends, meeting new collectors and finding marbles. We missed you and and few other regulars, but few old timers that were missing a while showed up. The whole time went so fast we couldn't believe it was over. Looking forward to next year already.

Thanks to the trio to organize this great event.

  4. Galen,

Your percentage for '9' and tail is way off. Please expand how you came up with such a high number. There are many MFC marbles that do not have a '9'. Also the color is exact match to MFC slags. Another creative supposition is a cut line on a cut line. I do not see a connection to the original marble to the last Akro folded reject cork.

  5. Contemporary agate artists do cut by hand, not by a machine. Still they get rid of all imperfections to make the agate look perfect rather than with facets. Again, imitating antique faceting might prove way too much effort for not much gain. Anything is possible though.

  6. High end contemporary agate makers see facets as imperfections. They cut agates with precision and without flaws. Someone might try to imitate antique faceting, but my opinion is that would be way too much effort for not much gain. It is time consuming and requires high level craftsmanship. Your marble looks to be a genuine antique agate. I need to hear from contemporary agate artisans differently to change my opinion.

  7. Ric,

I have only seen blue and green based submarines. It is a perfect example why it matters to differentiate an early NLR and a later Rainbo. There are many transparent blue or green based Rainbos that are not submarines. It has to be a NLR to be a submarine. This applies to many other color combos too, like a blue and black Rainbo does not make it a Blue Panther etc.

  8. Marbles are deceiving and look too good to be true. Pontils however are dead giveaway as they look terrible. But one needs to have an idea what they might be looking at. Otherwise buyer would think they found something good. Happened to me at a show. Love my magnifier....My best friend. Can imagine online auction, newbee and people will be taken for their hard earned cash.
