Hey friends,
I have some questions about Oxblood. It seems everyone wants it, and a lot misidentify it.
What is it? Is it just a colour, or is it actually Oxblood used in the colouring process?
Why is is so sought after?
Any info will be awesome!
Thanks!

This one is actually glass imho.
It may be a ballot box marble or game marble. (these came in black and white--the ballot box marbles, one color meant Yes--the other No)
Notice the grind marks and the little twisting twirl in your first image. These are both commonly found in Old German handmade glass marbles.
Nice find imho—does light shine through it?
Marble—On!!
Doesn't appear that light shines through this one

That looks like a German hand-made glass game marble or ballot ball to me.
Are German hand made glass the same time frame as the clays?
More or less prevalent?

Not an Alley, Alley Agate made swirls and this one has two opposing cut marks that push it more into the patch type range.
I believe that you have a Marble sold by "Imperial".
Imperial was/is? a company on the west coast that sold a variety of toys including marbles. They pruchase their product and renamed them and sold them as "Imperials"
The marbles that they purchased were from a wide variety of countries--mostely from Asian countries but a few packages list Mexico as a supplier.
Yours looks Asian to me and having eight of them makes me think I am on the right track.
I cannot remember seeing this individual marble before.
It is pretty cool.
Marble--On!!
Thank you again for your explanation. I just made an assumption, because these were with all the clays I bought, so thought they were better then Imperial

Drove an hour to check some new antique places I haven't been to. Almost stuck out, and the last booth had some baggies. My heart kind of stopped. They were listed as"Clay and Glass". There is a lot for me to look at, but obviously these took center stage. They are glazed, so I'm not sure if they are consider China's or not.
I will be posting some of the other stuff as I go through it, because I am beside myself.
Please excuse the extreme excitement. This is so freaking cool to me.

If you want to learn Alley, I would say you must get the WV Swirls identification book. It has Alleys sorted into the three main production locations, thousands of images of them. It's only available here: https://allaboutmarbles.com/wvswirls/
Hmm....
I may need to drop hints to get that as a gift!

Nice marble. I think it would be called a two color ribbon lutz swirl. Barely submerge it in water and take look (and a photo for us too). I think you'll be happy you did.
🙂
Would you clean this, and if so, how do you do it?

There are two books that I would suggest to you--they are not cheap-but pretty new.
"Alley Agate Company: marbles and pressed glass" and the latest book-"West Virginia Swirls".
These will help in your venture.
You are a searcher and I will leave the rest to you--just because I would want it this way too.
You are a kindred soul to me.
I very much appreciate you and will look for these books
All the best to you!

You go my marble collecting friend!-----good luck and post what you find here @TheMarbleConnection.
I for one appreciate your passion.
@Ric was just suggesting an easier entry point.
WVS are a hard thing to ID--at least for me (and many more).
Welcome back anytime and be prepared to take a hit or two on your ID's (not from me though-I just suck at WVS ID)
Marble--On!!
I accept all the hits. I don't want to throw a bunch of stuff against the wall and hope something sticks. I genuinely am learning here, and I owe it to this really awesome group of people
The passion and excitement is genuine. I needed something, and I have found it!

Nice images for sure.
I know that it took some work.
The size is always important in marble ID.
I know, you did great image work and were exited to post it. I have been there and done this--many times😁.
The details in writing are also important.
Marble--On!!
I have to remember the sizing!!!!
These are all .60

This one is a corkscrew--nice find!
The damage on it approaches it to being a "Dug Marble".
A little toothbrush action will clean it up though.
Love it as is--this is just me.
Marble--On!!
Thank you!
I was going to put a few aside to clean later. I may pick up a cheap ultrasonic cleaner.
Thanks again.....I am really enjoying this hobby
