Fao Schwarz, Soon Gone But Never Forgotten

Recommended Posts

FAO Schwarz, beloved toy store and iconic fixture in New York City history will officially close the doors of its flagship store on July 15.

Since its opening in 1862, the vast toy wonderland has attracted visitors from all over the world, and while it may have lost customers over the years

Are there marbles in the backroom, basement... I would love to look around in there.

No kidding. That place should be on the historical register. How could they close it? Guess it's not trendy enough for the people who can afford to shop there?

Wonder if they'll bring in people who know about treasures to help carry stuff away. Or if it'll professionals who just go in and shovel things into steel garbage bins without caring about content.

Hate to burst your bubble but FAO Schwarz is owned by Toys R Us, and they have only been at their current location since the mid-1980s. I doubt there's much NOS in the basement :-( Having been in their store in Manhattan a number of times over the past couple of decades, they have only had Mega and Imperial in their marble section, not even Marble King (or Jabo).

Seems like it's all about the "smart" phones and apps these days. No time for kids to play with real toys because they spend almost all their time in front of "smart" phones....Alongside their parents, who are also always on their phones. Society isn't exactly on the ball these days, unfortunately.
