My First Batch To ID!

Howdy everyone, this is the first batch of marbles I’d like to try identifying. I have a feeling that while they are rather similar in colors and patterns, there may be a few different manufacturers.

My initial thought is that most of these are alley agates, due to the colors and patterns. I have (or think I have) identified an alley carnival, which leads me to believe that other marbles from the collection are also Alleys.

I worry I’m committing a cardinal sin by only posting one angle of these marbles, I will try to avoid this mistake moving forward.

They look Alley to me also in just this one shot, if you have a "carnival" you have a very hard to find Alley.  Here are a few pix of some "Alley Carnivals"  for you to gander at. These are Bill MCcaleb's (mibcapper) marbles, a long time supporting member of this board, "Thanks" is given to Bill for these pix.

I’ve gone ahead and taken more pictures with less quantity per shot and at least two angles. Also, upon further inspection it seems that some are UV reactive which I have taken pictures of. The only mention I’ve stumbled across of similar marbles was a video about Cairo Novelty by Stephen B. I imagine there were more makers than Cairo, I’d appreciate any info shared about this topic as I have a handful of other UV reactive marbles to ID.

I don’t currently have access to calipers, but plan to snag some in the coming future. Using a standard ruler it seems all of the following marbles are 5/8” with some being a hair smaller or larger. Is a very slight variation in size common amongst older  marbles? Some of these also seem just ever so slightly oblong. Also, is there a preferred unit of measurement, mm or inches?

Chad, I took a closer look at the “carnival” I found, and I do now think I mis-identified. I’ll add some photos below. The reasoning I believe it’s not an alley carnival is because the bands of color are not as segmented as your example (BEAUTIFUL SHOT BTW). It has more of a single corkscrew swirl. Any thoughts on what it is, and the marble beside it?

Appreciate all the welcoming help, this has been quite fun!

Also, these were going to be a few of my focuses moving forward to improve my ID photos, any feedback is welcome:

  • Natural light whenever/wherever possible
  • 2 desk lamps to be arranged on opposite ends of marble in low light
  • Black or neutral dark soft cloth with minimal pattern to distract camera focus
  • Small stand for marble that does not obstruct, I plan to search the hardware store for cheap elastic o-rings
  • Tripod to hold phone/camera for maintaining exact angle

Are macro-lenses for iphones any good for marble photos? I imagine there are some USB macro cameras that could take some fantastic shots of detail.
