Fuzzy Chubbs
Howdy everyone, this is the first batch of marbles I’d like to try identifying. I have a feeling that while they are rather similar in colors and patterns, there may be a few different manufacturers. My initial thought is that most of these are alley agates, due to the colors and patterns. I have (or think I have) identified an alley carnival, which leads me to believe that other marbles from the collection are also Alleys. I worry I’m committing a cardinal sin by only posting one angle of these marbles, I will try to avoid this mistake moving forward.
I'llhavethat1
Hard to say for sure but majority look like Alleys from that angle. Welcome by the way. and worth mentioning that including the item size in your post can also help narrow down ID
Chad G.
They look Alley to me also in just this one shot, if you have a "carnival" you have a very hard to find Alley. Here are a few pix of some "Alley Carnivals" for you to gander at. These are Bill MCcaleb's (mibcapper) marbles, a long time supporting member of this board, "Thanks" is given to Bill for these pix. wvrons
There might be two or three that are not Alley. But they may all be Alley. Need closer pictures and views to be sure. All those flames here are Alley.
Fuzzy Chubbs
I’ve gone ahead and taken more pictures with less quantity per shot and at least two angles. Also, upon further inspection it seems that some are UV reactive which I have taken pictures of. The only mention I’ve stumbled across of similar marbles was a video about Cairo Novelty by Stephen B. I imagine there were more makers than Cairo, I’d appreciate any info shared about this topic as I have a handful of other UV reactive marbles to ID. I don’t currently have access to calipers, but plan to snag some in the coming future. Using a standard ruler it seems all of the following marbles are 5/8” with some being a hair smaller or larger. Is a very slight variation in size common amongst older marbles? Some of these also seem just ever so slightly oblong. Also, is there a preferred unit of measurement, mm or inches? Chad, I took a closer look at the “carnival” I found, and I do now think I mis-identified. I’ll add some photos below. The reasoning I believe it’s not an alley carnival is because the bands of color are not as segmented as your example (BEAUTIFUL SHOT BTW). It has more of a single corkscrew swirl. Any thoughts on what it is, and the marble beside it? Appreciate all the welcoming help, this has been quite fun!
Fuzzy Chubbs
“Carnival” ( heavy emphasis on the air quotes) and another that got sorted alongside just because of slightly similar coloring. I don’t expect the right marble to be an Alley.
Fuzzy Chubbs
Alley flames possibly? No UV here
Fuzzy Chubbs
These two seemed different from the four above, so I separated them out. These seem more red and the white has more layers.
Fuzzy Chubbs
These two seem like different makers, the right having a more translucent red.
Fuzzy Chubbs
Moving into the UV. Are these Cairo Novelty or is someone about to drop some knowledge on me?
Fuzzy Chubbs
Three more of the same white/red translucent that react to UV light.
Fuzzy Chubbs
This UV reactive marble has darker reds, almost like an amber. There are also more stripes of clear.
Fuzzy Chubbs
Last one for now, I do still however have a handful with similar white/red features that I’ll have to figure out. This is completely opaque white/orange with a single swirl and UV reactive.
Fuzzy Chubbs
Also, these were going to be a few of my focuses moving forward to improve my ID photos, any feedback is welcome: Natural light whenever/wherever possible 2 desk lamps to be arranged on opposite ends of marble in low light Black or neutral dark soft cloth with minimal pattern to distract camera focus Small stand for marble that does not obstruct, I plan to search the hardware store for cheap elastic o-rings Tripod to hold phone/camera for maintaining exact angle Are macro-lenses for iphones any good for marble photos? I imagine there are some USB macro cameras that could take some fantastic shots of detail.
Chad G.
These are both Akro. The one on the left "looks" like an Akro corkscrew and the one on the right is an Akro patch. The one below also appears to be an Akro corkscrew. I'm leaning Alley on the rest you have posted.
Dave 13
hi the one that kind of has the same colours as what you were thinking is a carnival is a nice Akro corkscrew that might not of twisted all the way, the other one posted with it is looking Akro to me as well but i can’t see the seams /cut marks that good so i may be wrong i’ll let someone else ID the others here is a pic of my Akro

Chad G.
All 3 of these definitely look Alley to me, as I lean Alley on all the rest of the opaque white based red swirls you have posted, there may be one or 2 that aren't Alley but all the remaining are West Virginia Swirls.
