I had my doubts about this one Ebay item 261023527886 (sorry can't seem to link here) But at a high bid of £365 hope I am wrong.

Nice marbles, could they be related to the German/Euro sparklers, glass and color looks right. I can't view your post #6 but here's a semi-trans 'imperial' not nearly as nice!
-
Nice ones! I have a couple of the blue white on the left but have never seen the blue yellow. Thanks for sharing.

Giant Onionskin, One Of The Largest Known To Exist?
ziggyzora replied to jeroen's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Good topic Jeroen. Only reason I have not contributed before is because I have not found any that big, guess the same goes for most. Good luck on your jumbo onionskin mission! -
Would anyone be able to do a side by side pic of these 2 types? They could easily be confused by anyone like me, who doesn't have both. a HTF Peltier one ebay item 221053225025 a few hurricanes

#6 is an excellent example of side by side pics of 2 different marbles which could easily be confused by collectors

Colors, design and glass look spot on for an old one, also, particularly in pic 3 can see the glass surface marks as you would expect to see.

German striped transparent sounds good to me. Slag glass was around before the term was used for marbles, to me it makes sense that the slag marbles should resemble slag glass These 3 pics would call striped transparent and this one German slags All of them pre WW2

A Killa For The Handmade Collectors!
ziggyzora replied to zaboo's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Nice alternating latticinio! Yes that looks like a "gapey pontil mark", not a marble term, just an expression used for the open ones (can be ground, polished or even faceted), a clear pic of the surface always helps tell if original. From recent posts would say window pontil is the correct term for the gapey ones. -
Maybe against popular opinion, I believe many of the old German hand mades have gapey pontil marks done at, or soon after the time of making. This one is 1 5/8ths Pics 1 and 2 with flash, pics 3 and 4 in daylight showing pontils and surface wear, pic 5 further surface wear.

#15 rare left twist and seller didn't mention it! go on, you got a good buy, is condition that bad?
-
Pics 2 and 5 show one pontil and pic 4 shows the other. In my experience the larger ones do come with gapey pontils but nothing to suggest this was done later than when they were made. Camera flash can lose the detail a good close up pic in natural light might have retained.
-
I also see a pic of each pole. My understanding from the description and pics is that they are selling an original condition marble, with original 'polished pontil' marks, but from here the pics are not clear enough to accurately assess the marble.
-
Point taken, good advice thanks.
-
I was trying to say subtly and politely that they are just regular right twist. Now I have no idea if you are fooling yourself or trying to fool others.
-
Yes,unconfident bidding!!! I was simply answering the post that it is possible that the marble in the listing sold for less than some might expect due to inaccuracies in previous listings. I don't think anyone claims to be an expert, but from the large number of German handmades you were buying on Ebay about a decade ago, thought you would know the basics between left and right twist.
-
The same "knowlegeable collector" sold 2 German hand mades as left twist, when they were clearly the regular right twist. A basic error like this could lead to unconfident bidding.

One of my fave types, a few of my collection... and some similar ones may have been made in France...

Really Great New European Marble Website! Check It Out
ziggyzora replied to JVVmarbles's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Nice swirls Winnie! Swissmarble you are welcome to use my pics. I can take more or retake in a better way if required. As mentioned above I have no info on them. They are found occaisionally in England but not made here. Most that I find have purple and range from 11/16th to 1 1/8th. Maybe if you added some on your site, there will be more people from Europe looking and more info could be gathered. -

Very glad that you are welcoming European machine mades. From what I have seen there are no books or websites as yet, that show the full glory of European swirls. I have no info on them, can only guess from findings. Here is a couple of my faves. No doubt other folk here are collecting them too. -
Really Great New European Marble Website! Check It Out

Agree, but in this case looks to be a European collecctor with a lot of beautiful German hand mades purchased in US at top price and now looking for US machine mades. Not seeing any real interest or love of European marbles. -
Balderdash, there are more car boots here on bank holidays than any other day. Nice scope btw.

Foreign Baseballs - German Or Japanese ??
ziggyzora replied to nutz4lutz's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Good question Nutz. Here are some of mine 1/2" to 1 1/8" fig 8's on the board, 'pinch' or 'messy' pontils in the side trough. Maybe these 2 types are from the same place? My best guess is 1930's to as late as 1950's. Germany or Japan? Both were big toy importers to UK where all mine are found. My gut says Japan. -
The top pic has some reminds me of these (ebay lot), note the unusual pontil similarity to your bottom left on ist pic, these are mainly left twist, can't make out which way your pic ones go. and the one in 1st pic 1/3 in 1/3 down reminds me of this single pontil one brought here from Portugal prior to 1978, I think it is German.
