I wouldn’t say they are MK. That sheen makes them look like a foreign modern marble, but I couldn’t tell you who made it.

Help Needed--Akro or Something Else?
PittsburghMarbles replied to Marbleized's topic in Marble I.D.'s
Yes I’d for sure say Akro. -
I know exactly where the Navarre factory was in Navarre, OH. It would be interesting to see if anyone’s ever dug around it. I’ve walked the creek behind it before but didn’t find Jack except some modern vitros and such that are in nearly every creek in America. The other places where Leighton etc made marbles are harder to locate online and I can’t find their exact locations, for example I he was in Steubenville and Shadyside Ohio for some time. I found one Leighton style marble a few weeks ago at a construction site at a former 1890s house location in Steubenville that I got permission to poke around at but it was pretty damaged. It would be nice to know where the Leighton sites were if they aren’t already dug out. Maybe I or someone could get permission to dig at them. One can dream.
-
Yes, many websites and even some books have these misidentified as vitros. But they are most def Akro.

I have a friend who has probably one of the best Navarre collections around and he was kind enough to allow me to photograph it. So this could be a great resource to identify Navarre marbles. Is there a good source that has Navarre, Barberton etc marbles? Ive never found any good online sources for those early companies. I have a friend who has a giant collection of Navarre but I am not really sure what the difference between them and Barberton is, as Navarre also has melted pontils sometimes.
-
So a melted pontil is indicative of Barberton? I would agree though that it looks melted.
-
Ehhhhhh I’m seeing Akro…
-
The first one is an Akro silver Oxblood, the rest are Akro Oxblood patches.
-
Sorry I don't have more photos, someone is selling their collection and I went and checked it out and want to know if this is a Navarre? It has the one pontil mark. I have a bunch of Navarres in my collection but haven't ever seen a light blue one like this. Thanks for the help. Untitled by Pittsburgh Marbles, on Flickr Untitled by Pittsburgh Marbles, on Flickr

Let's see your Master mibs 😲
PittsburghMarbles replied to Tommy's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Super nice box and mibs. I just came across the same master box last weekend at an antique store but they wanted way too much for it, but they had a nice original alley box for a fair price so I went with that instead. -
Well Im only 33 and not even young anymore and Im usually the youngest person by far I see at marble shows and antique glass shows. I give talks to Pittsburgh glass clubs about marbles but nearly everyone is at least twice as old as me. So, to get teenagers who are addicted to 6 second tiktok videos of people farting and slapping each other interested is beyond me and then by extension to even get people my age interested I don't know how. I show my friends my collection and they usually think its cool but other than briefly thinking the glass and history is cool I highly doubt they think much more about it or would get into it. However, I have gotten one of my friends to be nominally interested into digging for antique bottles and marbles at local town dumps, so I guess that's something. Another one of my friends, I gave their 6 year old boy a bunch of common cats eyes to play with and he seems to enjoy them as I also gave him my 1990s plastic marble run connector set (whatever their actualy name was) from when I was a kid. Ive gotten a lot of older people interested in marbles though, as they have a greater attention span maybe; I dont know. Like today, I appraised some 40 year old guys collection he inherited from his grandpa and told him all of the history of his marbles (which he had freaking fantastic marbles) and he seemed to love it as I said, "most of these marbles are a very interesting and poignant part of WVs history" (I was in WV today appraising them). He gave me a couple super epic German marbles he had in return. But maybe he was mostly interested in their value as he had well over 10k of vintage WV marbles and germans.

I just helped appraise someone’s marble collection they got from their grandpa, spent hours separating them and telling him what they’re worth and the guy gave me these big honkin Germans and an assortment of Akro slags etc for a very good price, can’t freaking believe it. And yes I’m currently stuck in non moving traffic so I wasn’t taking pics and driving…

New Here and My Collection

I've been collecting antique bottles since I was in college around 2009 or so when I found a local hutchinson bottle in a creek and have been obsessed with glass ever since. I only really started getting into marbles about a year and a half ago or so. The first marble I really dug or cared about was a master brushed patch at a construction site in Pittsburgh about two years ago. I had no idea what it was but asked a marble person I knew and was astonished that one could tell who made a marble and about what year it was made. About a year and a half ago I virtually knew nothing about identification. But since, my collection has swelled as I live only about an hour away from WV and have been traveling every weekend to find jars of marbles and have learned everything I can there is to know about marbles and study them constantly every day. I now have every American company, even most of the clay marble companies from Akron and early marbles like Navarre that I was lucky to dig at a construction site that I got permission to dig in in Navarre and my collection includes even some of the sort of well known Euro companies like Veiligglas, German striped opaques, Japanese transitionals and along with many antique German marbles. I guess you could say I'm obsessed now and couldn't care less about bottles and only hunt for marbles anymore. Anyways, here's my collection that is sort of put together after just moving to a new house in the past three weeks; there's still a ton I have to put out on the shelves, but its mostly all there. Most of these marbles come from jar finds, however some of the nicer ones like the Germans I've bought online and the Heatons and Cairos. Roger Hardy Akro Collection
PittsburghMarbles replied to PittsburghMarbles's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
^ hmmmm he was in there when I was taking photos and he didn’t seem to mind and didn’t say anything about not posting them but if he doesn’t want photos of his collection out there I guess I can take this down... I just figured it would be a good reference for people and I bought his book and 80 bucks of Akro stuff when I was at his store yesterday; which I highly highly recommend anyone going to if you like Akro glassware and collect it as he has tons for sale. And obviously if you care about marbles you should def go see his absolutely incredible one of a kind world class collection. -
I’m new to the forum but not new to mables or glass collecting but I’ve had many new scores the past few moths. Got this sick end of day giant onion skin at a yard sale for 40 bucks. I couldn’t believe it when I found it and I tried to control my excitement in front of the seller. Prob the best deal I’ll ever find ever.

Roger Hardy Akro Collection
PittsburghMarbles replied to PittsburghMarbles's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
^^ I’m moving into a new house, our first house ever after renting my whole life, so most of my bottles are packed away. But here’s some of my display as of now and a new Akro box I just found yesterday at an estate sale. The demijohn I’m holding I bought back in college in Arkansas in 2011 at some dudes barn after I told him I collect bottles and got it from him for 20 bucks, it’s an 1840s Pittsburgh made demijohn and worth about 2k. The Beech nut tobacco porcelain sign from around 1920 I dug up about 3 weeks ago at a dump; where I also found a Navarre marble from around 1890 below the sign in Steubenville. Roger Hardy Akro Collection
PittsburghMarbles replied to PittsburghMarbles's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I've been collecting glass for nigh on 20 years when I started when I was 13 or thereabouts. I have a massive antique bottle collection but got into marbles a couple of years ago after I completely ran out of room for bottles. I think marbles are more fascinating than bottles. I am and have been obsessed with birding too since I was young, and marbles are much like birding with identification and pattern recognition. I've amassed a pretty sizeable marble collection of every known marble maker in the Americas; along with quite a few Euro marble makers; it helps being only an 1.5 hours away from where most of the WV marble making companies were. I dig for marbles almost every weekend down in WV and around where I live at town dumps and its awesome when a marble pops out of the dirt and I know that I'm the first person that has held that marble since someone touched it in 1930 or whatever. My akro collection however only takes up one shelf and pales completely in comparison to Rogers. I mean he probably has millions of dollars of akro and got to dig at the factory site before you would get arrested for doing so. I probably only have about 5k of akro marbles but its a start and luckily I didnt pay much for them as Ive found most in jars or in the ground. -
Edit... Sorry, someone stated that he doesn’t want his collection posted online so I deleted this post... don’t feel like getting in trouble being new to this forum. However; if you are ever in Clarksburg you need to go see his collection as it’s the worlds best.
