I will no doubt repeat this again but our old friend Ron described how the rollers were repaired with copper back in the day. There were pits that formed due to the constant heat that was applied, especially in the upper regions of the rollers. Copper was used to fill the pits in to make the roller smooth again. Welding them in with iron/steel would be less cost/time efficient. (At that time at least) The most efficient repair to keep the marbles moving is what was used. Copper was/is cheaper and it has a higher melting point than silver. This may explain the copper marks on your marble well enough. They may have been some of the first off the line after a repair to the rollers. I am just passing on some wisdom that I have always appreciated—I just had to ask and he (Ron—amongst many others) were there with at the very least an educated guess. Ask aways—on anything regarding marbles and their construction. I, along with many here, have gathered much wisdom to pass on and once in awhile I/We will try to remember it and try our best to pass it on as well. cheese
We thought that at one time, as one of many theories about the coppery blotches. But we've found these blotches on many makers, even once on DAS if I remember right, which does not have bronze repairs on their rollers. I think it must have something to do with never-seize or graphite. Yet another theory.
