  1. how about some Conquerors? Vitro made kazillions, i think, but some of them are worth a look. these are mostly from lots i sold years ago: first some odd ones (one has a metallic band, another has Vitro oxblood: now some showing the variance in Vitro colors (top three are known as Victories): some more: some "Phantom" Conquerors: and some color-based Conquerors:
  2. wow, when i first looked at that cat's-eye, i was gonna post and say something like... "that's a very hard-to-find vintage cat's-eye! out of all the millions of cat's-eyes i've sorted through over the years, i've come across only 3 or 4 like that. they have definite u-shaped cut-lines with spidery palpable ridges; the glass is an intense green; and the single blade is very flat...a keeper if you're into cats!" then i read through this thread and decided i should add: "good grief!"
  3. lovin this thread...thanks for showing, ya'll!
  4. bump at least it isn't a hundred-plus degrees like 2 weeks ago!
  5. so steph, can you provide a quote from those references, please?
  6. those bags are filled with Vitro Anacortes mibs. just fyi.
  7. according to my limited research, 1899 is the first year for a patent for the use of marbles on a game board as "men" (i.e., they are placed in concave spots as markers). this one uses marbles to jump and remove the piece that was jumped: game-board or puzzle USP 623876 here's another one from the same year. this one uses marbles to jump--but NOT remove any other pieces (the object being to move one's marbles from start to home): solitaire game USP 631050. regarding turning the game into marbles vs checkers: the latter patent mentions using checkers as alternative playing pieces. i have seen many old board-game patents that mention checkers, pins, pegs, marbles, and the like, as types of games pieces or markers that can be used. i don't think it's much of a stretch to imagine the different game pieces. anyone trying to make a buck off marbles would have pushed a game board with cut-outs or concave spots. my guess is that ordinary folks may have even made their own game boards and used buttons or nuts or whatever was free. but folks who were financially advantaged would have desired the more sophisticated games with colored marbles and game boards.
  8. can't answer the question about when it became a marble game, but did find this interesting...a patent for tongs to grab the mibs with! (source)
  9. in case anyone else wants to read-up, here are links the two patents mentioned above: 1927650 filed: 07-21-1928 issued: 09-19-1933 title: Method of and devise for making vitreous objects 1946879 filed: 02-02-1931 issued: 02-13-1934 title: Means for and method of making agatized bodies i've only been able to locate two other patents for Sellers H. Peltier/Peltier Glass Company, and both concern shaping the gobs after cutting: 1865787 and 2302886 (the latter doesn't look like it's necessarily intended for marbles).
  10. it might be interesting to see if Dave McCullough has read the patent and what he thinks the marbles it made would have looked like. just to be factual, the patent was filed in 1928, but not actually granted until 1933.
  11. hey Ann...personally, i think the feathery Pelt slags were made using the process described in US Patent #1927650. there was a discussion over on LOM where i suggested this idea. most people don't care to read through details and imagine the method and device described in the patent paperwork. (i applaud anyone who can make it through the entire thread on LOM.)
  12. go to your Profile (upper right of screen) and select My Settings from the little triangle/drop-down list. then select the Forums tab and make sure there is a check in front of "Watch every topic I reply to"
  13. ooo i like the first one, well i like em both--nice "connecting" of the mibs in the first one...
  14. the overlap is there if you have a smaller sized window open...try resizing or close your bookmark/links list on the left...the overlap goes away then.
  15. i like the new look, too. one difference is that if you click on a link, it opens in the same window (rather than opening a new one) and you need to use your browser's BACK button to come back.
  16. looks like Laura Berretti's work. see how they're made at LOM where they're also for sale. they are neat marbles, me thinks.
  17. Edna, those look like Bogards, to me.
  18. Edna, those patches in your last post are the bomb! and i could swear a few of those dug ones (loose, same post) look like some JABOs i've seen.
  19. ok, what is a Chrissy sub? never mind. i should be there on Thursday.
  20. ah, i can't stand having bags that need to be opened! i never sell any, either open 'em or give 'em to Al. the ones that get opened are the best teachers. ya'll keep them pics coming--it's curing my boredom, my head-ache, and my grumpiness!
