Wow!! I don't think I've ever seen one of those BIG ones!!!! Way Cool!!!
-
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, one of the few sweet things about living in a cold winter... The fireplace is on every night!!! Even better, now that it's gas fired and starts with a toggle switch!!! LOL PS... Hope you don't have to drive in any sleet / snow down there!! LOL
-
OK.... One more step.... If they are all contemporaries, the large clear could be an early Matthews and the 3 mid-sized solid colors could be his "gumballs!!" (Hey, it could happen!!! LOL) I'm just not seein' how this could POSSIBLY turn out to be a bad deal!!!! ROFLMAO!!!
-
I'm pretty sure the one I've pictured above, went to Dani... I had 2 that were very similar and she ended up with one of them...
-
Ya know, Steve... The more I look at the big clear one next to it, the more that one intrigues me, too... Could be just a big Vacor clear based swirl...... OR..... All those lines could be headed over to a pontil on the upper left / rear side.... It doesn't look like a "standard" German handmade... But, it could be an end of cane sort of thing. A few of those lines look pretty well spaced and directed for a random Vacor... I know, I'm goin' off on a daydream tangent here... But, when people who only know a little about marbles get their hands on some, the "usual" stuff is easy for them to market... The less usual often gets put aside as less desirable.... 'Crossing fingers on the other hand........
-
OMG Scott!!! That is TOO freakin' cool!!!! As long as we're in this "non-glass" thing... And, my fingers are crossed for Steve and his hopes for a Gutta Percha... Let's pop this in here, too....
-
Yep, they can be pricey!! All early rubbers originated from tree resins... Gutta Percha is just one of them. Wikipedia explaination is probably easiest explaination... Probably the most recognizable form of gutta percha is in early photo cases like this one... Ebay auction Here's a Gutta Percha that's got a lot more structured design... But, there are some with just simple splotches of color that look very much like the one in Steve's auction. 'Course... There are rubber balls that have that sort of coloring too... So, we keep our fingers crossed that Steve gets lucky!!!
-
Mmmmmmm.... I know they exist, but it may take a while for one to surface. It would be cool if this gets back to your connection and it works out!! Let us know and post pics if it does!!!

Here's to many many more 21sts!!!! LOL
-
I think I'd lean towards old, too... Is it well in-round? I bought a red & white opaque quite a few years ago. I felt pretty good about it when I bought it. But, my resolve weakened over time. I ended up selling it in an auction.... It did OK, but certainly not what it should have if it didn't look so odd. It was out of round in an odd way for a large marble. If the contemporary story is true, they may be of the same source.

Keep us posted... Fingers are crossed!!!

Steve, I'm pretty sure the one you have and the one I pictured are the same guy... These both came up in a previous thread.... This new one is really quite different. I hate to seem naive, even though sometimes I can be... But, I still have a teeny shred of space left for the possibility that this could be real. I strongly doubt it... But, I'm open to the possibility...

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!! They're all nice!!!! Scott, is that blue one faceted???? I've gotta put aside a day for picture taking!!! LOL
-
Here's a REAL moss agate!! This is an old picture and I should re-do it... But, the green is so "leaf-like" it looks like it was fresh yesterday!! LOL I'd have to dig it out to see if it's faceted... I believe it is. A Penn. Dutch A couple of gold band china's that I never knew existed.... Until I learned that even an old dog can learn from a relative newbie.... LOL And, a cool contemporary china, by Shawn Weaver!!
-
Based on the pics and location, I'd also bet lunch that it's a fake... He sure is getting better!! Good enough that I'd really love to see that one in hand. I saved some pics of a questionable one that came up a while ago... Same guy??
-
Yep, I was going to suggest wetting it too... It certainly does look like a German handmade... I'd guess, either a latticinio core, or a coreless (I'm not sure of the current term for that) It sure makes a cool looking piece of jewelry!!!
-
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..... My monitor is screaming nothing but "Yellow!!" Is there a trick question here?? LOL

Andrea, I'd go with Bill as being a better "go to" than I... He's been keeping up!!! LOL When I first became familiar with these names, both Cloud and End of Day meant essentially the same thing... If there was a difference, it would have been as Griff says... Both were ALWAYS single pontil marbles... I believe it was Bob Block who first changed the marble collecting meaning of "End of Day." For years, there has been a type of glass that was traditionally called "End of Day." It looks very much like most onionskins.... The term comes from the concept that at the end of the work day, glass workers "cleaned up" bits of colored glass from the work area, by rolling a rod with hot glass on it over them. Then, that concoction of glass was fashioned into an item... This may have been the origin of the name in general glass terms. But, it has stuck to that style of glassware, even though it is now produced intentionally with that design. OTOH, marble collectors coined the phrase because... due to rarity.... it was thought these actually WERE a product of the end of day clean-up. Given that they would be a hand gather, rather than a cane type marble, they would have to be a single pontil... So, the term in marbles became mixed between the traditional general glass term, which would also cover most 2 pontil cane type onionskins (like shown above) and the original style of a blotchy, speckled, single pontil type marble, thought to have been created in the literal term.

OH!! I thought they might be something new... What vintage are they??

Ditto that!! And THANKS, Jack!!! You Too!!! Hey we need a color of the month for January, any suggestions??

Wow, those are cool... Almost have the look of a hybrid cat??
-
Wow!!! How cool!! Welcome Bob!! We also have Debra Stanley-Lapic and her daughter Whitney, BOTH champs at Wildwood, lurking here... PS. Debra, I haven't had a chance to go through Jim's manuscript yet.... But, I haven't forgotten!!!

Thanks Bob!!!

Quite a while ago, I saw a You-Tube experiment for making these things... I think someone had posted it??? Here it is.... Liquid Marbles While shopping over the past couple of weeks, I ran into a container of them and it wasn't sealed, so I could open it and touch them... They're kinda like very firm, wet jello!!! I dunno if the commercial product is the same as the experiment... Here's their site Aqua Gems I decided I wasn't quite ready to add them to my collection!!! LOL

Whoa!!!! That Madman is incredible!!!!
