The Glass Addiction Alphabet Contest Auctions
Scoop replied to Steph's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Hi Folks!! No problem Steph!! We'll take all the PR we can get!!! LOL Yeah... I discovered that trying to fit working my animal rescue league's yard sale and listing 39 GA auctions all in one weekend is biting off more than I can chew!!! LOL Actually, I probably would have been OK if I wasn't collecting the door prizes too.... We REALLY need a volunteer for that next year... It's not hard at all. Everyone I contacted was great. But.... It chewed up time last week, that I could have been putting into the auctions... I also worked on designing the ME page to help push the sponsors... I could have done that AFTER I had the auctions listed... I just felt that the sponsors really needed a little more for all they gave... So... I've gotta run and get ready for tonight... 10 PM EST.... God willing and the crik don't rise, all 39 will be up with full pictures!!! Stop in!!! :Cool_653: -
Wow!!! Gary, that is SOOOOO Awesome!!! Not only is it a great memorial to your Dad, but it has a great pedigree, also!! Ken has created some major trophy's for baseball and other sports... Check out his Gallery of Commisioned Work that puts your Dad's trophy in the same league as Ricky Henderson, Mike Scott and Ken Griffey Jr.!!! Not too shabby!!! LOL AND...... Not only is he a gifted glass artist, but he's also a great guitarist!! Rising Spirit is a beautiful CD of 4 centuries of classical guitar. (I'm listening to it, now!! ) On top of all that, he and Sonya are two of the nicest / coolest people on Earth!! LOL

The 2009 Glass Addiction Alphabet Letter Marble Contest Gallery has been opened!!! Glass addiction is a contemporary marble board created by Brian Bowden. Many of the "Usual suspects" there are glass artists.... About 5 years ago, someone posted a link to an art gallery contest that had a topic theme (It may have been the alphabet, I don't remember...) We decided to run a contemporary marble contest using the alphabet as a theme... It was a great success and we've done it for 5 years now... Here's the deal...... Sometime around March, someone on the board says, "Hey, isn't it about time for artists to start working on the Alphabet Contest??" .... And then, a date is set for the entries to be in (May 15th) A thread is started for letter selection and artists select the letter(s) they wish to represent... It's OK to have more than one entry for each letter and it's OK for an artist to cover more than one letter. The goal is to cover them all (We always have!!) We have refined the voting process to a combination of a judges panel and a general public vote... We really enjoy having visitors to the board check out the gallery and vote for their favorites!!! SOOOOO, please check out the link for instructions and VOTE!!!!! :Cool_653: Contest Info and Rules

Ot: Have A Great & Safe Memorial Day Weekend!
Scoop replied to glangley's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Thanks so much for that, Felicia!!! And Gary... Hats off to you and all of our others who have given service to our country.... My brother (Air Force) gets a Purple Heart this weekend for losing the end of his finger helping my Dad (10th Mtn. Div. Army) repair a garage door... :Sad_headshake_tweetz: Luckily, it's the most accidental damage either of them have ever experienced and we say a big "Thanks" for that, also!! God Bless those who have not been so lucky..... -
Best ( Most Convincing ) Marble Ballast Story I've Seen
Scoop replied to Steph's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Steve... I don't get it.... I'm really surprised at your reaction, considering your location and the stuff you've been doing lately.... Here we have a situation where folks are doin' the pony-up to keep Jabo alive and someone has gone through the hours of research to come up with an article that cronicles some of the reasons this is a necessity.... It may not be Earth shattering info, but heck, it's relevant to what's goin' on. I thought it was kind've a cool window into how history has repeated itself over and over and we haven't gotten smart yet... Maybe if you folks in WV (and around the country) would rally up in the memory of Dear Mrs. Dye, there'd be less unemployment there?? 54 years later, how many companies now?? How many employees?? Hello?? Until our threads are rolling off the page 2 or 3 times daily, I don't see any reason why anyone needs to be rude about anyone posting anything.... But honestly, I thought this article was VERY relevant to what's going on in our hobby today.... -
They all look great, Carole!!! Thank you so much for being part of the inspiration for me to do my "Sunday Night Kennel Cleaning" at SARL (Salem Animal Rescue League)

Until you need a new belt!!! LOL The last time I saw him, he was concerned about that!! If need be, I was going to try and find out who handles that sort of thing for the Lowell Museum...
-
Now, if that said Atlanta, wouldn't we be in trouble!!!! LOL
-
I know...... You said, "Don't go there...." I did.... You knew I would!! Cool!!
-
I'm with Mike!! Except that I don't think it's the outer lines that are sunken... It looks to me as if the solid white core is incomplete... Maybe towards the end of the cane and the white just ran out?? The blue and red seem to be OK?? Both are a cool find... But, that first one is really a looker!!! So, it really DOES happen??? LOL

'Looks like Elmers Glue... If it is, just a putting some water on it should soften it up... The measure & little mug are way cool, too!! I missed them before.... -
ROFLMAO!!!!!! NOW, Ya got it!!! 'Works for me!! Just bear in mind, that lady gave birth to 17 babies and ate 5!!! :rol:
-
OK.... Dogs and rodents demand equal time!!! WHAT?? Cats don't allow demands???.................... Oh, OK..... Well, we'll just take a little space......... Pearl being coooool!!! ......... 'Cuz, well....... She IS!!! Myles.... "Holy Crap!!! Did someone say CAT???" Nilly (Now in Hamster Heaven.... Could it have been her attitude??) "Cats????" "Talk to the HAND!!!!" Lowla... Yes, that's L-o-w-l-a, not EL O EL A, Lola.... "I think they smell funny....." (Lowla's picture must be enlarged to be full appreciated!!! LOL)

My kids have taken tours of the Lowell (MA) cotton mills which were entirely belt driven.... Here's a link to the concept, Steph... Mill Power Drives I went once.... The weaving rooms are about 2 football fields long and FULL of these belt drives.... The noise is absolutely DEAFENING!! (No matter what the article says about it being quieter!!) And, these women worked all day, long hours in that environment.... :Sad_headshake_tweetz: Interesting fact... Contemporary glass artist and marble maker, Ro Purser's studio and machine shop on Whidbey Island, off the Coast of Washington, is entirely belt driven!! (To the extent that he is able to keep it so...)

Shadow Box Little Bottles And Marbles

I frequently find these bottles at sales and yard sales... Some are marked Wheaton on the bottom (Yep, that's the NJ Glass Factory) Some are marked Taiwan (We all know what that means!! LOL) I always buy the Wheaton ones if I can pick 'em up for less than a dollar... They always sell for at least $3... Some are more, but I don't usually get too crazy about the detail... They are a "Bread & Butter" type item for my co-op space... Glass color and topic rules apply... Blue & Red= Best, Amber & Green= Not as hot.... I haven't studied the hot topics... Some go lots better than others. The others I find (Taiwan or unmarked) don't sell... Here's a search for completed items on ebay... You'll have to be signed in to open it. Wheaton Mini Bottles on eBay PS... The eye cup is cool!! Lots of people use them for marble stands!! -
This is sooooooo cool!!! There are some distinct differences in the colors of agates... This info (pictures) may be able to help a lot in determining whether an agate is of US or German origin... Were they faceted?? (Was that covered in the previous thread? I don't remember.... )
-
Wow... Cool Carole!!! And, little bit scary.... Can you imagine what it must've been like for those guys?? 'Bet there weren't a lot of volunteers!!! LOL
-
I spent some time Friday evening discussing Jabos with Steve Sturtz... I complained about the darkness of the colors and how they all seem like "fall" colors... I like BRIGHT & WILD!!!! It sounds like something they're working on... I guess it's not as easy as it sounds, to get what you want out've a marble machine!!! LOL The pinks, blues and greens in those above are showing PROMISE!!!!! :Cool_049:
-
Steppin' way back and thinking about how it looks vs. what you say about it.... Feel & weight... We just had Corian counter tops installed.... Could it be something like that?? There are people doin' some fun stuff with Corian scrap (see below...) I'm sure it could be put into a sphere polishing machine... Corian Search on Esty

As much as I might buy new glass marbles from Jabo or Vacor, I don't usually purchase new spheres in gem shops... They just don't appeal to me as much as glass... But, recently, I did purchase 2 marbles very similar to the ones Steph pictures above, just because they were freaking beautiful!!! I know that they are brand new and that there must be BUNCHES more like them.... But, I also know that there are vintage solid goldstone marbles "out there...." I have one that I know I've had for at least 25 years.... Were they intended to be marbles when they were made, or created to be used in jewelry or decor??? I dunno.... (Mine would be too big for jewelry) But, they did turn up on rare occasion and they were considered special.... The bulk of my older collection is "stashed" in a difficult place to get to... If the opportunity comes up any time soon, I'd love to compare the older marble to the newer ones... I wanna say that the grain of the newer ones is finer than the old... But, I can't until I compare them. I'd like to think there is SOME way of telling the difference... I think I can say with some certainty that there were never any vintage solid goldstone marbles (not to be confused with aventurine) in colors other than the traditional goldstone.... But then, I've been proven wrong before....

'Sorry Steve, that doesn't look like what I think of as a gutta percha marble... :Sad_headshake_tweetz:

Totally Ot...as I Was Doing My Nightly Marble Search...
Scoop replied to m!b$'s topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
There is something kinda creepy about them... They're a little too realistic!! Heavy Duty collectable, though.... Some sell for VERY big bucks.... Can you imagine being a collector and having a bunch of them watching you all the time??? OTOH... I'm sure those collectors could say stuff about us, too!!! ROFLMAO -
Hmmmmmm.... Interesting.... I wonder if she knows that?? LOL
-
Wow!! That is sooooo cool!!! The movie is fun, if you like bang 'em up action... With Brad and Angie, how bad can it be?? LOL I don't remember the headboard... Now,I wanna watch it again!!
