....................Still no word from Rick??? The whole karma of this thread MUST be reaching out to him!!! He's gotta be feelin' it!! LOL

I was absolutely crushed by the news today..... Only a few on this board will know Lani Dustin (I know I'm spelling Lani wrong!! I'm sorry!!! ).... She was known, for a time, in the marble world as Lani Clark.... Bev Brule introduced her to John Dustin at the Northeast show.... It was a match made in "Marbledom!!" John still casually collects marbles, but Lani moved on to buttons... Particularly those made by Sam Biern, who just happens to be Jerry's (raremarble) father...... The article was announcing the tragic death of Bob Clark in a car accident, Lani's past husband and still a dear friend.... (They were hit by a Drunk &%$#@^'ing Driver!!! ) ... I was terribly saddened for her.... But then................... The article revealed that her 22 year old son, Ariel, was also killed in the accident....... OMG........ Lani would lie on RR tracks for her boys.... Both are beautiful, smart and gifted... She's devoted her life to raising them to be the very best that they could be.............. I'm just devastated for her...... Article from CNN

Loss Of Our Friend In The Marble Community
Scoop replied to raremarble's topic in Marble Friends Memorial
Oh Jerry............... What can I say....... There's no words, but you know what I mean..... I've known Bill for??????????? 35-40 years??? He gave me my prize red mica at one of the first marble shows... (It was great to be a kid collecting marbles!!! ) Another of the "Old Guard" is down. That marble club in the sky just keeps getting better.......... Please give my love to Eric. Thanks Jerry!! -
COOL!!!! So, now we know where at least 4 of 'em are!!!
-
I'm pretty sure Lloyd was referring to the one you pictured....... So, this would be Brady's Turbine "Apple" This would be Tom Reed's Birdcage "Orange" And, this would be Ray Laub's attempt to copy it.....
-
WOW, I dunno Steph.... I don't remember the marble in the auction... Maybe Lloyd does?? But, if it's that one in the picture, we were talkin' apples an' oranges.... There was so much talk about the whole Birdcage thing, it's tough to know who referenced what.... As far as the comment of there only being 5 made??? I think that was just a pondering of Rick's.... Someone may have said, previously, something about only 5 known?? To my knowledge, there just isn't that much known about the marbles I pictured.... Based on what Lloyd said, I'd guess that we're not talkin' about contemporaries.... As far as the one in the picture??? I'm Capt. Shultzy.... "I know NOTHING!!!" LOL

No Steph, I think the original examples of both marbles and paperweights date to that period (1930's) To my knowledge, there are NO paperweights that were ground down to look like marbles... At least, I've never seen or heard of one.... It was debated that Tom's may have been that..... Probably because Tom can be so abbrasive that most people want to find a way to slam him down..... But, I am convinced that his is authentic... I haven't seen his in hand. But, the others that I have seen are 100% original, unground surface... They have the same surface and pontil as an old sulphide... Tom may be irritating, but he's no fool... He knows the original surface of a marble and if he says his is the real deal, I won't question it..... His was accompanied with a 1930's dated note that sure looked authentic to me. I have a picture of it in my computer, somewhere... (Tom also knows his ephemera well.... ) It is very possible that this design has been reused in paperweights, recently (Though, I honestly don't know that...) I don't know of any marbles done recently, either.... There was an attempt in the 1930's, by a group of Europeans, to reproduce many of the better, collectible paperweight designs in China... (This is well documented in paperweight history...) Even though the glass and workmanship quality of the 1930's Chinese pieces was far inferior to the workmanship of the original designs that they copied, it is far better than the glass paperweights coming out of China today.... I would think that a 1930's birdcage could easily be differentiated from a modern birdcage.... WAIT!! I know the answer to the next question..... NO, I don't know what original Western paperweight the birdcages were copied from, or if they were an original design........ (A serious study of paperweights might answer that question.....)

It seems like there are some who feel that Tom's marble may not have been authentic?? Yes.... It is authentic... There is one in the Svacina collection at the Toy & Miniature Museum of Kansas City, there is one in the collection of the late Beverly Brule and I believe there is another board visitor who has one... I've had 2 in hand and I'll bet lunch AND dinner that they are authentic, made as marbles and not ground-down paperweights.... Yes, 1930's is the correct date for the paperweights (I can post the book reference if necessary, I don't have it handy right now....) Here's a couple of pictures ... I can't remember which ones are from where.... I *think* the yellow is Tom's and the multicolor is Bev's.........
-
No need for corrections on that baby!!! PS... By the way... Those aren't "brown" bands.... Those are **GOLD** ROFL
-
I don't want to stretch my neck 1/32 of an inch into the battle over the "Exotics..." But................... This glass testing firm that dated the sulphides might be an idea..................

Check it out..... Somebody likes 'em!! California Sea Horse Thanks Lloyd!!
-
In another thread, there was mention of California Sulfides.... Does anyone have any pictures or info on them?? My guess on the yellow mica sulfide in this post from Land of Marbles, would be a "yes..." I know there was colored glass and multiple figures, but I don't remember any mention of mica....

Hey Brian, where can we buy these babies??? I'd love to have a couple to put with your others....
-
I know I was one of the ones that spoke out to Brian in hopes that he would sign these marbles.... As strongly as I feel about their being marked, I have to agree with you, too, Steph.... Again, I think John's shamrocks are a great way to "mark" without defacing... Something small, but deep, seems like it would have a better purpose and nicer effect than a large shallow scratch that is both ugly and easily removed.... BUT, for Brian's benefit.... I'll never complain... I really appreciate his mark, no matter what it is.... Thanks Brian!!

Ok...... 5. I'd call a caged, latticinio core tri-level 6. Double Latticinio in green glass 7. Double latticinio in blue glass 8. Goofed up double latticinio in green glass 9........ I gotta go back and look again..... 9. Lobed solid core
-
I like that!! LOL I gotta go back and see the rest of 'em, now!! LOL
-
Uhhhhh, I don't think I'd really call any of those latticinios... At least, not in the usual term.... The first is a naked ribbon.... After that, it gets kinda goofy, cuz they are all so "not typical." I'm not gonna pull out any books and see what "authors" call 'em... But, I'd go with.... The second kinda looks like a tri-level with a ribbon core?? (caged) The third is a double latticinio ribbon? The fourth looks like it is actually just a 4 banded coreless (maybe colored glass?? The ones I have are....) But, the bands are so intricate and nice, it comes off much better than that.... I have a couple of these and they really don't seem to fit into the only category that names them.... HEY!!! WHOA!!!!! Never mind about that Latticinio thing!!! I was only seein' 4 pictures!! Usually, when the post is wide like that, on my monitor, all of the posts go wide.... Duh.......
