  1. I'm thinkin' Galen about nailed it!!! But, I also agree with Felicia, that first one is way cool!!! Note the spelling for Akro Agate... A seach for Agro won't help you!! It seems to be a very common mistake.
  2. As far as machine mades are concerned, I think Galen's right... I've never seen any bigger than the Vacors. I have a few of those that size up to 1½"+..... The antique handmades are rare in sizes over 2½". I've never heard of one hitting over 3".... If there is one, it would most likely be a sulphide. The others to take into consideration would be the large glass industrial balls that were made for things like the claw feet in Piano stools.... ('Can't remember the maker....) They may have hit right around the 3" mark in the larger size... And then, there's carpet balls.... As much as many marble collectors might have one or two, they usually aren't taken into consideration as marbles.
  3. So then..... Thinking back to my original ponderings when this thread started.... Is there a definitive way of telling one of these CAC's from a "Japtran??"
  4. Ooops, that's right!! I purchased a BUNCH of Japanese trannies a long time ago... All of them were peewees... So, I focus on that size... But, yes... I have seen the other sizes!!! We had some in one of our fundraiser auctions and I BID on it!!! I just can't seem to register that in my head!!! At this age, I have so much stuff crammed in my head, I have to be careful what more I learn... It's getting to the point where if I put anything new in, something else falls out.... That must have been one of the things that fell out...............
  5. I know that these are not Japanese transitionals (as much as some of them remind me of them...) But, I'm still curious about the sizes, here.... Are these all in the general 5/8" ballpark?? (Jap. Trans. would be smaller...)
  6. Isn't that amber & blue a "Blue Lace?" (oops, that was answered while I was typing!!) Barb, trust me.... If you can say that much about them, you ARE hooked!!! ROFL Becareful about selling and regretting!! I think, if you look very hard at these and then at your white marble, you'll see that the swirls in these are very distinct and have a curled ribbon-like shape... Your white is either a Cat's Eye (I'm still not sure, but I can see what others see to lean towards it) or, it also falls into the similar category of swirls... But, from a different company. The swirls are not as distinct, the base glass in not as clear and (as I remember) doesn't it have some teeny streaks of a darker color in it??
  7. ? I'm only guessing.... But, it seems that time and energy (both in fuel and manpower) during production is far more expensive than the raw glass.....
  8. Hey Brad, what a great collection!!! I wouldn't doubt that the Benny is old for a second and it looks great in the group!! It's those with the scenes on them that always used to catch my eye... I kept hoping to find just ONE without the hole!!! LOL
  9. Yep... Those have been around... Along with some interesting chinas that are similar. I always heard them referred to as "Parasol Handles." It doesn't happen too often (Thank Goodness!!) But, there's nothing like the roller coaster rise and fall of seeing one of these that's REALLY cool, thinking you've found a Holy Graal marble, only to flip it over and have that gaping hole slam you back down to Earth!!
  10. Welcome!!! I didn't personally know your uncle, but I'm thrilled that our board was able to give you a glimpse of how some of his marble collecting friends cared about him.... We've lost some wonderful people over the past few years... All are sorely missed!!
  11. Yep... Nice ones!! Not considered clays... As Galen said, Chinas and a Crockery.... Mannnn, it's so nice to see the positive flip on the Atlanta marbles!!!
  12. Those are so cool, Carole!!! And, Rick's picks aren't too shabby either!!! LOL My heart's with you as far as your Dad goes, Carole.... I've gotten way too much experience in that area over the past year.... When it gets to the point where you know where the path is headed, all you can hope for is a smooth and peaceful ride... But, we'll all be praying for a turn in the road!! Hang in, Girl!!
  13. Congrats to Dani!!! I think I mighta gone for the Star Gazer, too!!! (If my car hadn't gotten a freakin' FLAT!!! ROFL)
  14. I finally got around to trying to gather all the pieces of jewelry made with marbles that are similar to the necklace that Joe posted a long time ago in this thread. The findings are all so similar, it seems evident that it was all one maker's work... There's 2 sorts of findings that actually hold the marbles... The spring wire and the 4 fingers... But, both are found with the "leaf" things hanging from them, so I would think they were made in the same place. All the necklaces have the same clasp.. I found the pin that's pictured while I was actually looking for a different pin (I'd forgotten about this one...) I still can't find the one I was looking for (I REALLY need to organize!!! LOL) It's a totally different setting from this... But, it's also a leafy design. It uses the 4 fingered finding sticking out from the center of the pin, rather than hanging from it... I'd bet that it also had a similar marble in it, but someone removed it and replaced it with a German handmade peewee swirl.... There are also some men's cufflinks and shirt buttons that use the same 4 fingered setting (I've got some of those around here, too....... Someplace.... ) It seems all that I have are solid colored marbles (unless there's others I haven't found, yet...) But, I have seen pieces on ebay with the patches... I also have a necklace & bracelet in the design below... I remember making jewelry as a Girlscout, using the "twist" design in pendants, pins and earrings... Usually, we fried marbles to put into them... But, these are smaller than the "craft store of the '60's" findings.... Probably about the same era, give or take 10 years... But, the marbles are not like anything I've seen "loose." They are glass....
  15. Your right Steph.... I have an aqua and a darker blue that are very similar to the green Latt.... But, I've never seen anything quite like the red... It's almost like a corn husk looking thing, but with 4 bands... Very cool!!
  16. COOL!! No disappointment there!!! Cal & Sheryl are awesome!! This should be fun!!
  17. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!! Those are beauties!! It's REALLY nice to see handmades get a little attention!!!!
  18. I sold a Gropper box to Hansel... It had clays in it....
  19. I've only made the mini bags for Bo and Mig... But, I'm psyched to take an idea and "run with it..." I've been doing a lot of sewing and hand work since I was a kid... So, I guess this is kinda like Chris Juedemann doing the "Kid's Marbles".... I'll either take an idea for a bag and try it, or take pictures of a marble and try to make an appropriate bag for it... Maybe mimicking the design from the marble onto the bag?? We'll have to wait and see who chooses it and what they have in mind!!
  20. I wondered how that Ripcurl lasted so long on the list!! Nice choice, Carole!!! I expect my bag will be the last one taken and I'm psyched, cuz that would be Kevin!! It'd be a thrill to make a bag for Kevin!!!
  21. SWEET marble!!! Mike's been working on marbles for a while... He's been so modest, saying he wasn't really that good.... LIAR, LIAR Pants on Fire!!!! ROFLMAO!!! Congratulations, Steph!!!
  22. That is a cool display!!! One thing to watch for if your looking to collect.... Some of these use marbles... Some of them use a single, solid piece of glass that has ½ spheres molded into it and a cut metal plate over it... If your buying, in hand, it's pretty easy to tell... But, online, it's a question that needs to be asked. My experience is... The answer is usually like, "Well, I'm not really sure...." (It escapes me as to how someone cannot be sure!!! LOL .... But, that's my experience!! )
  23. Another situation that works out like the discussion about Joseph's Coats... Over time, each little variance changes definitions and muddies the water... It's hard, but it's important to try to keep the lines as defined as possible... They will change anyway. All we can do is try to keep it from moving too fast...
  24. I don't know for sure about the World's Fair Tray... I know that Bev Brule had a tray in it's original box... My memory may not be correct and I'll have to check it out... But, I *think* it was a World's Fair Box with a large size tray... The tray was not pressed with a World's Fair logo, but it had alternating red, white & blue shooters... I don't remeber ever seeing a pressed tray in the large size. Yeah, 5-6" sounds about right... I can get a picture, if I can remember where the large one is... I'll see what I can do about answering all.... Steph, keep reminding me!!! LOL
