Mattshaw1953
Hi, can anyone save this lovely onionskin, it has a lot of damage, the worst being 2 large deep chips, it is 2"+, i guess quite a lot of glass would have to be removed.Any help would be great? Steph
Temporarily moved to main chat area. Hopefully I'll remember to move it back to the restoration forum after it's had a chance for more eyes to see it.
Ric
The glass would probably pop out of those chips if you grind it, so if they are deep enough such that rounding the marble to the deepest point would get into the core, it may not be possible to restore it by polishing. In that case, perhaps someone good with a torch would try?
Mattshaw1953
Hi all, I don't think grinding to the deepest point of the chips would affect the core, it's such a shame as 2/3 of the marble is in great shape!, does anyone fill the chips, ie like a car window would be fixed for chips? Steph
For pure, personal display purposes you could try to build it back up with a water soluble polymer. It would be seriously frowned upon to sell such a marble after the repair.
Mattshaw1953
Hi Steph, I'm totally confused and really upset that you would think I would resell a marble like this?, why on earth would you think I'd do that?, really odd thing to say, I think you've got me all wrong? Steph
Sorry. Just mentioned it. Didn't mean anything bad by it. If I didn't mention it someone else probably would have. Here's a link to Mike talking about his method: http://marbleconnection.com/topic/19143-open-core-latticno-would-you-polish-it/?p=165686 I kinda sorta remember him talking about filling in things with significant damage, but I can't swear to it. Mattshaw1953
Ok Steph, still odd, I didn't mention selling the marble on? Why presume so? I don't see responses like that in other posts?, maybe I'm not welcome here for some reason?, it's totally lost on me?
Steph
Please don't assume the worst. I didn't mean anything bad. That's all I can say. If I had a marble like that I would definitely consider Mike's method. It would be good to have something reversible in case you ever changed your mind. lstmmrbls
I tend to mention one should keep their repaired marbles whenever I answer a post dealing with repairs. Do not take Stephs post personal.
Ric
Believe it or not, there are people who come here and try to learn specific details so they can better rip other people off. We like to make it clear that we do not condone such behavior. Hopefully, you agree with us. If you do, don't take it personally, stick around and have some fun. Mattshaw1953
Ok, fair enough, and yes I do enjoy buying and selling, however I probably sell 1% of the marbles I buy. If I wanted to resell the damaged marble, maybe I would of posted on "Buy, sell, trade", that's all? I've dealt with a number of people On this board, all will tell you I'm more than fair. I'llhavethat1
I'd just leave it the way it is. If 2/3 of the marble is in great shape that's not too bad. Your choice though. And I'm pretty sure the other comments didn't mean to insinuate you'd do something underhanded. There are some good marble restorers on this board. If I did as good a job as they, I'd sign my work for the sake of pride but again it's a personal decision. Good luck with this nice marble
Mattshaw1953
Ah thanks!, if I decide to have it restored, and find someone willing to do so, I'll post some pics. Cheers.
