I cant be the only one!

Recommended Posts

The more I read the more confused Im getting.. Turkey heads, 9's, diaper folds, poles, pontils melted not melted, pinched not pinched, hand gathered, moonies & flints. 🫤 I am just feeling frustrated I wanted to make a window but didnt want to glue anything of value or importantance. Am I the only one who has been this confused?

Attend ONE marble show and they won't be mysteries any longer.  You can learn in 2 days in person what will take you 1.5-2 years struggling to learn from flat, one-dimensional photos of varying lighting, focus and color balance on the Web.

^^agree that seeing in marbles in person and speaking to knowledgeable collectors is a quicker way to learn....

This is great if you live in (or able to travel to) an area where marble shows are hosted.

But like anything, it takes time and effort to process info without 'overloading'.

Curious about the window you mentioned?  I repurposed a double pane window and was able to fit the marbles between the glass panes without gluing, mayble this is an option for you

This is no doubt the best way, but afaik the closest marble show (by auto) to the OP is the Ohio show in Canton, about 3 hours away. The Ohio winter show was just held a couple of months ago, and while there’s usually a summer show I’ve not seen one posted yet: https://www.marblecollecting.com/marble-community/marble-show-calendar/

It can be very difficult to grasp the nuances of these spheres without having examples in hand. I would highly recommend at least one visit of at least a day or two to a well-attended show if you’re at all serious about this hobby. Side benefits - it’s a helluva lot of fun, you will meet some great people, and see some marbles that will both inspire you…and blow your mind.

I wanted a way to display my marbles so everyone could see what I see. I just love the design and detail to this tiny works of art. So I found an old farm house window and decided to redo it to make almost like a sun catch. Turns out it wasn’t working out the way I thought it would. The marbles are so irregular and the sizes are just so different. I tried 2 pieces of glass I tried wire fencing. The marbles are just to heavy. So I decided to glue them to the glass. I researched it and decided I wanted to know if it would ruin any or take away any value. So here I am struggling to learn and not wanting to destroy what could belong to my children someday. I will take a look and see if I can find a marble show. I don’t know that my marbles hold much value as far as $ but I personally have a crazy connection to them. Thank you guys so much for the advice and sharing of knowledge.

Using any chipped worn marbles is always a safe bet to use.

I've made suncatchers with marbles.

Hot glue works great, and when you want the marble back the hot glue pops off when chilled.

You can also post a picture of your marbles here first to get an idea of value.

The window I am working with is a 3 pane window. I wanted to use vintage to go with the feel of the marbles. I mean I could probably get it to work if I want to take away from my vision and spend more money than I had thought.

I wish I had that option when i started😕 instead I had to buy every manufacturer to learn. A couple years of daily research and using forums.

But you are correct the photos are not a good way to learn. I've been resorting bad IDS from Facebook.

I will for sure post pics and try the hot glue. Thank you. I think I may even look for an old glass top table. Maybe its me but I think the whole jar or gumball machine thing just shows that you have them. Not the beauty of them if that makes sense. I feel they should be seen and shared with everyone and I have way to many to try to display them on little stands or boxes.

Alan and Royal are so right.

May I suggest hooking up with someone from this forum and have them escort you around a show.

Entering a motel room is most awkward and intimidating. If you had a wingman, it would knock the edge off and they could help with your communication with the dealers.

Wishing you the best on your journey!
