  1. It measures 0.614" or just a littel under 5/8". If the melt is thinner than target viscosity, couldn't the mass be consistant but in the form of a thinner, longer stream? Is the shear syncrinization adjustable so they could zero-in on making the desired marble diameter, for a given glass (properties) run? Have no idea of how the machine mechanics work together but just woindering.
  2. <<<<<< My Avatar is a CAC clear based ST shooter........R&T on its side.
  3. John, nice to get a visual as to how a butt-crack between cut lines might occur. Here is (what I belive to be) a clear based example of a Pelt that folded in on itself between cut lines. Interesting to "visualize" how much the gob must have elongated between shearing actions, before it hit the pan, as evidenced by the depth within the marble that the yellow ribbons traverse. Guessing that the elongation factor would be more pronounced if feeding more flowable, lower viscosity (higher temperature) glass.
  4. Hello John. I understand that combining glasses with differing COEs will cause tremendous internal stresses, leading to fractures if not complete destruction (marble halves) as the marble cooled. So anyone making those mibs would have to have good glass chemistry knowledge and/or prior experience in working with the individual glass components so the effects of combining them in a formulation would be predictable. 5. Well, I have no first, second or third hand information to support or dispute how these marbles came to market or the circumstances leading up to and after the CAC plant closure. Hypothetically, I would think marbles this beautiful would have been taken home by the workers, like as a keepsake or remembrance of a place that had become an integral part of their lives, maybe even a place that defined who they were within their community. And hypothetically, if there came a point when access to the plant was abruptly denied, maybe due to bankruptcy proceedings or whatever, I can see how there may have been a lot of marbles left at the site, probably for years. If there really were marbles uncovered by a work crew however long ago the story goes, who would know the circumstances as how they got there. Would I like to know all the answers to all the questions that surround these mibs?....absolutely! But based on all the information that has been kicked around (and around) for 10 plus years regarding my exposure to it, I choose to collect them and enjoy them. To each his own, right?..........
  6. Guess this might be a German machine made???
  7. A late night hypothetical could also be applicable to CAC factory workers facing an inevitable plant closing. Got all this Cambridge off spec product and cullet lying around. No more production runs needed because distributer contracts have already or soon will be expiring and won’t be renewed. Boys, let’s have some fun making marbles out of all this leftover glass…….what the heck.
  8. Below is a canvas of a clear base ST, with quite a bit of embedded debris, that I speculate would have been due to refractory debris or coal fly ash entrained in the combustion gases that came in contact with the molten glass in the furnace. Wouldn't the presence of embedded refractory on the surface of the marble serve to date the marble manufacture to an era when refractory lined and/or coal fired furnaces were employed? Would you expect to see the same kind of surface debris on marbles with glass fired in modern day electric of natural gas furnaces?
  9. Thanks Craig (down under:-) Bill, love the massive piece of matching cullet accenting your mibs. Reminds me of "Prospectors" show..........a presentation piece compilation, only for the mibologists instead of the gemologists.......
  10. Deja Vu all over again, almost 10 years later.............. http://marbleconnection.com/topic/2096-ca-cullet/
  11. Bump........CAC transparent yellow based orange and white HG pee wee swirl.
  12. Yellow based white and orange hand gathered pee wee.......
  13. Couple electric orange shooters........
  14. Royal blue cork screw flinty opal (backlit)........
  15. Looks more like one of the TMNT masks.............Cowabunga Dude!!!
  16. I just call'em SO, STs, Subs, Cobras, cyclones, etc. Never latched on to the "exotic" term.
  17. I have a green and white swirl mib that has the same swirl pattern. It is some kind of plastic or gutta percha mib but definately not glass. Always wondered what vintage it might be. Have no pics but will take and post a few this weekend.
  18. I have a few cyclones and Guinea cyclones. One or two I think are cobras and a few are wannbe cyclones, but I kike'em.
  19. Nice orange peel Craig! Not many of them around.....
