I am trying to upgrade my Alley collection to include some three and four color examples. Seeing as they are going in my personal collection I prefer mint or NM+. Harder to find examples welcome too. SNYD

I would like to just chirp in for a minute. Please be very careful if burning and smelling fumes. Many of the good old people in the plastic industry are now suffering with health issues because the quick old fashioned way to determine different plastics was to light it until it flamed, then blow it out and inhale and smell the smoke (fumes). If you have been in the industry long enough you can learn the smells of different plastics. Now we know of chemicals that are bad, yet in the old days no-one knew. Be careful please. This is why we now have equipment to smell and do analysis for us. SNYD

Enormous Marble Collection At Auction!
SNYD replied to smitty's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
On no ! I thought I could sneak in and get some cool mibs to show you at Sistersville, I'll ware a mask....................You'll not know who I am. I hate to bid against friends......but all is fair in fishing, hunting and marble collecting. I do want to talk to you about maybe camping at one of your farms. Kim and I just love the WV area and want to camp this summer down that way. See you at the action, I may be getting there friday night, when are you coming in? SNYD -
I found that books are good for general identification. The best route to follow would be to attend some shows if you can. Nothing beats holding a marble in hand to get the actual image in your mind. Also, people like WVRON have some of the greatest knowledge and history you could ever find. I have taken marbles to Sistersville and Ron has spent hours going through each marble and IDing them for me. I put each marble in it's proper ID box and now use them for helping me do IDing myself. I think he enjoyed it too, as he saw some special marbles that were harder to find types. He did it and never wanted anything in return, how great can people be ! ! ! ! Another great person to find and ask is Steve Smith from Ohio. He is always helpful and honest. He also has some contacts to find hard to find mibs. Be careful, there are those out there selling marbles that do not know as much as they lead one to believe. Get to know the folks at the shows and it will not take long to know who the standout people like Ron are. Books can not give you that personal attention and they can not have all the marbles pictured in them, at least not as many as you will see at a show. Check out the show listing here, in this web chat site, they are updated. Welcome to the great sport of marble collecting and remember, the greatest benefit of collecting marbles is truly the great people you come into contact with. SNYD

Howie, welcome to one of the greatest adventures life has to offer, a hobby. I am glad to see your interested in marbles, as the future of knowledge needs to be handed down to fine young people like yourself. As you grow, your hobby too will grow, one of the most enjoyable things I have found collecting marbles has truly been the people I meet and become friends with. Since I have started attending shows, I have made friends from all around the country. The folks that have responded here are some of the best. Good luck, have fun and enjoy. SNYD

Did not make it down, we had a bad day. We hit high winds and snow an hour into the trip. At a rate of 10 - 30 mph we would not have arrived there until June sometime, so we returned home. It took us two hours to get home that is a normal 45 to 50 minute drive. Now SUnday it was great, clear and worm. Figures ! ! ! SNYD

We make it to Sistersville about four times a year. We are really good friends with Jim & Mary so we go down sometimes to spend time with them and sometimes it is to find mibs. I will be at the show this September if all goes well, we have not missed a show in six years. SNYD

I could have an analysis completed if you don't mind it being cut. Seeing as I am a Quality Manager at a world known plastics company, I could send it out to be tested. Let me know if you are serious. If it is plastic I can tell you what it is, if not plastic then no report will be created as the lab is only for plastic analysis. SNYD

Sorry darn fat finger didn't listen to my brain It is a 250 box, the bag has the large V on it with three dots and then three dots together to make a dash I guess. I will try to get photos to Scoop to post. When I bought the box, the seller said it was a Vitro bag and he did not know why it was in an akro box, so he sold it for a real low price. I told him it was an Akro bag, he was a marble pro(*&$@#*!) so I did not argue with him about it. He was pretty snobby. He knew best. So, I offered him $100.00 and he scooped it up like I was nuts.............. I could be, but I think I got the better buttered bread there. He sure knew what a cat eye was though, I think he had some strong feelings about them and how old they were and rare, I got some nice Akro, peltier and Masters with a bunch of really nice Alley marbles for next to nothing because they were not cat eyes. I just bought an Akro box 350 with all oxblood patches, including all the one inch mibs, it has the red dot-dot-dash war time bag. Any idea of value??? Is there still interest in the war time set? Box -bag and mibs are all mint...........They were stored in an old metal dome top trunk. I also got an old milk box filled with mibs. Still going through them. SNYD

All I can say is WOW I just love the blue and white blending, your a true wizard my friend. It is more than I could have hoped for. I really like how the blue and white cullet looked, but you have taken it to an all new level. You have just the right amount of each color, equal or close to equal colors to give the marble the affect I like. "BRAVO" The dark blue look very interesting, although hard to see the actual interior of the marbles. But knowing what I sent, again I think you did much more than one could hope for. I was hoping to see multiple blue ribbon or flow in the dark blue. From what I can see, you did it. It is no wonder you busy, your work is unforgetable works of mastery. You rock

I checked this out many times, as I too thought I was missing something. Newbies must be careful, I have been contacting a lot of sellers on ebay informing them that they are selling Jabos not what they have listed the mibs as. Like: a seller selling Jabos as rare Sistersville Alley marbles. When I contacted the seller, they pulled the mibs, very nice seller too. The marbles were sold to them as rare Sistersville Alley. As she said, she don't know enough about marbles, she buys and resells and that's it. Now, I am sure there are some folks out there doing it on purpose, but sometimes not. "Knowledge is the power" This is so true in anything you do. SNYD

Thanks to my good friend Steve Smith, I was able to aquire several bakelite marbles large and medium sized. My question is this: Are bakelite marbles considered machine made or hand made? SNYD

Well I have a break in the snow fall for now. It stopped snowing enough to shovel the roof off and start the garage roof Saturday. So far we got 40" of white stuff, most of it in one night Got up in the morning Tuesday and the only thing I could see in the driveway was the top of the cab of my Tacoma from the bottom of the door windows up. It figures that this year I do not have a bunch of marbles to go through to keep my thoughts on the level. This much snow makes one a little depressed I am enjoying the wild life though. When we finally got the driveway cleared I had eleven deer sleeping in the driveway. I was able to get them some corn. I think they were very happy with it. If anyone has sunshine please send our way. Is it close to spring yet? oh hum Oh, if anyone want fresh northeastern, Pa snow, let me know. If you pick it up, you can have all you need or want FREE...............California sounds so gooooooood right now. ANy jobs out that way? SNYD

Great looking marbles for sure. I am sending out to you today two cullets, one Alley one Marble King. Do you have access to enough cullet for yourself? If not let me know. SNYD

WVRONS - not if I get them first Ron, I am looking fro a special Alley for a very good friend that I can't seem to find. Did not see very many good Alley mibs at Sistersville. I posted it on another post today, it has the photo. Do you know if I could get one, if so, before Christmas? Also, I have a good possibility of getting some Alley mibs that were dug in Sistersville this past summer near the Coke plant. Right now price is the issue. Good rare mibs, some really nice ones in mint shape, some NM, a lot of fractured ones. I'll keep you posted if it works out. I have a good contact right there working the gold mine for me.SNYD

I need help from all of you fellow mibsters. I have a very close friend that only collects one maker of marbles....ALLEY. He does not attend shows as he has issues that make traveling hard. I have attended several shows looking for an ALLEY that is in the photo to buy for him for Chirstmas. I know it is getting close to being too late, my hopes are someone knows where there is one for sale. If you have one and want to sell, PM me and we can work out the details. If you know of someone who has one, please let me know. SNYD
