  1. Could be. There's also a guy named Baker (I forget his first name -- it's been a while since I've bought any contemps) who uses a lot of gold aventurine like that.
  2. OK, I checked, although not too deeply. A few formulas have the notation "Used for pool balls" next to them ((greenish blue, royal blue, navy blue, turquoise blue) while others (more) have "For export and pool ball marbles" (turquise blue, green, lavender). Hellmers was pretty precise in all of his notations, so it may be significant that he seems to distinguish "pool balls" from "pool ball marbles." Were full-sized pool balls ever made from glass? Not something I know anything about . . .
  3. Beutiful. I've been lucky enough to get some of the slags, but not lucky enough to find any of the striped transparents. Yet.
  4. Now I'm torn between that and the Dakota . . .
  5. Wow. Spent a fun three-day Texas marble show in a small mob that included Bobby. I knew he was ill, but . . . Condolances to his friends.
  6. I don't know about Peltier. Mike (migbar) would know about that, if anyone does. But I do know that Akro produced pool balls -- there are glass formulas specifically for pool balls in Henry Hellmer's batch book. Looks like they were for export, best as I remember. (I'll check tonight)
  7. Unfortunately, I don't have a pic of this one lit up, but I think you can tell from a regular photo that it lights up pretty darn hot . . .
  8. Don't worry. Although there's a bunch of whippersnappers here, there're also a bunch of old men and a bunch of old women too! Cranky Ole Ann
  9. OMG, Galen and I had the same marble bags as children. It's fate.
  10. Yellow auger nice in the dark . . . .
  11. My first one was blue-and-white-checked gingham cotton with black shoelace strings, made by my grandmother. My second was store-bought from somewhere, leather panels (four or six?), alternating dark brown and a whitish-gray. I've seen the style but not the colors for sale on ebay occasionally. If I see it in the right colors, it'll be mine again!
  12. Oh great. Going off into a corner to think about this for a while. What an amazing box . . .
  13. Yes, in a kind of haphazard way. I'm an art historian, but don't usually have a lot of truck with modern and contemporary European and American art -- but I worked in a big art museum for a while and it's hard not to bump into it sometimes. Plus, a great friend of mine opened my eyes to the possibilites of found art (Cornell was discovered along the way), which yawed open a brain portion I had not been aware of 'till then . . . so I have a certain appreciation of what Cornell was doing. The example shown is really bad!
  14. Now I'm going to have to go home and sit around with some of my marble boxes open and my head in my hands. For hours and hours. Shall we all go do that as a group? It may take me awhile . . . Are any of the cut-offs slightly curved at the ends? Kind of propeller-like?

After a minute I realized I was staring at this question as a mouthbreather. What does he mean? But it was really kind of interesting. Like . . . Do you suggest the maker's choice of a different material (stoneware rather than glass) might take them out of the category of "imitation?" Or . . .

Are the imitations stonewear, then? They kinda look like it . . .
  17. Winnie, that box is fantastic! Can you show us more of the cut-offs? The variety? Jealous, yes, I'm jealous!
  18. Oh. So that's what's been happening to me . . . .
  19. Good pics, Al, thanks -- hard colors to show. This is the only pic I have -
  20. I have two of the "Windex" blue Vitro caged cats, and one of the yellow Pelt bananas in amber/yellow glass that Alan was selling a while ago. And a few of those Anacortes pink-peach-apricot-based horseshoe cats. Other than that, the only variation from colorless that I've seen I don't really count -- that tint of blue or green that some call bottle glass. Winnie, those are great green and blue ones! And the more I look at it, the more I like that amber one . . . And Clyde -- do you have a pic of the MK red one? Must be stunning - - - Hansel -- I would have guessed that only two of the board cats were color-based. Not surprised to hear that none were, though . . .

The sound of Ann weeping piteously . . .
  22. Just got these and thought of Cat's-eye Jack . . . he would have liked them . . . sigh . . .
