Giant Onionskin, One Of The Largest Known To Exist?
jeroen replied to jeroen's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I have bought a new record giant onionskin marble recently. My biggest was 2-39/64 inch and 381 gramms. This new one is 2-23/32 inch, (alsmost 2-3/4 inch) and 425 gramms. It is a single pontil with mica and 6 panels. which is very unusual for onionskins. -
This marble is now for sale at the 9-11 December Morphy sale as lot nr 1441. Estimate 7000-10.000! I think any lutz marble with a faceted pontil is suspicious. What I see on the third photo of the first post is exactly what I saw on a remelted marble I once had.

The estimate for the multi color Lightning strike is far to low in my opinion. I know only one other lightning strike with multiple colors in the lightning strike. But check out 1747!

Not long ago I received an email and it was about fused cane marbles. He has such a marble. This collector wrote: "2 cores with very thin open seam between them". I did not understand the word "seam" at first, so I looked it up. I don't know if I understand it correctly, and if the word "seam" stands for the opening in the cane, or the space between the canes. But I did see the opening in the separate canes at my fused onionskin, and also with my other fused swirl. Look at the photo of the fused cane onionskin. I circled the two openings (seam?) of complete canes. Also the photos of the fused swirl. I put it under my scanner. It is hard to see, but the latticino core is a complete cane, and ends into a very small tube. So that is potential a complete marble, and a single ribbon was fused alongside to it. I hope I understand it now, but comments are welcome. Jeroen

I am not familiar with marble boxes. Is this an original one? http://www.ebay.de/itm/funf-alte-handgemachte-Murmeln-im-Karton-/181770175417?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_77&hash=item2a5258c3b9

Are the colors of this type of marble not directly on the surface? Would the colors not disappear during polishing?

there are several topics on this forum about clown onionskins, which tell what is considered a clown. Just type clown onionskin in the search box http://marbleconnection.com/topic/19189-cloud-vs-onionskin-and-definition-of-clowns/?hl=clown

wow!, never throw away the box ;-)

Hi Steph, would you think the box is 90% of the value?
-
I don't know much about machine mades, but this box sold for a lot of money. What is so special about it? Are the marbles rare, or is it the box what made them so expensive? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Very-Rare-Genuine-MF-Christensen-9-Graduated-Marbles-Box-Set-Slags-Opaques-/261849719826?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cf775a412

If that is a remelt, than they do a very good job! The pontil looks like the rough ones one would see on later handmade marbles joseph coats an lutz marbles etc.
