Cloud Vs. Onionskin And Definition Of Clowns
jeroen replied to oldmarblenut's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
What I have heard, is that those bright colors are from later, post 1900, and also called English style. Very interesting about the colors reaction and causing the black lines. These two clowns (see attached photos) don't have the lines around the blue and green also. Jeroen -
Ebay Plug: Ok Clown Onionskin For Sale
jeroen replied to jeroen's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I am not sure, but I think with a clown, the white color and the other colors are in the same layer. The black lines around the color is not black, but just a small line with no glass. I know that Hansel has a good clown onionskin. Perhaps he can tell more about the construction of a clown, and the difference with a Joseph coat. Hansel send me an email today with some questions about my clown. I know if he thinks it not a clown he would tell me. Jeroen -
Hansel, I am curious about big bob and the twins Marbles Also? Jeroen

We have the second warmest winter here in the Netherlands since 1706! And not a single snow flake until now. I think you got what we normal have of cold and snow this year for a bonus ;-) Jeroen

I can only remember marble bags. My grandfather had a small toyshop from 1933 to 1989. I never asked him about marbles. He died 10 years ago, but I was not collecting marbles then. Otherwise I would have asked him how marbles were sold. Jeroen

Hi Jeroen, A beautiful marble! Try to make a new photo from a larger distance. The marble is now out of focus, and not sharp. This marble deserve a better photo! The sun is shining here, so probably at your house too. Great conditions for good photos!

Why did they make such an inner core? I have a few with such a inner core, but it seems a waist of time to make one, because it is hardly visible. The only thing that I can think of is that such an inner core has an effect on the colors on the outside?

Amazing how many original boxes there still are left. I have never seen an old marble box here in the Netherlands.

Giant Onionskin, One Of The Largest Known To Exist?
jeroen replied to jeroen's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Thank you steph! These are hard to find. -

Hello, I recently bought this very small lobed onionskin. The size is 11/16 inch. The lobes are not symmetrical. One is much deeper than the others. As often the lobes were hard to catch on camera, but under water they show much better. I know of one collector who has small lobed onionskins in his collection, but I have never seen a photo of a very small lobed onionskin. I would love to see photos of other examples. Jeroen

Giant Onionskin, One Of The Largest Known To Exist?
jeroen replied to jeroen's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Hello, I have added another large 2-1/2 inch+ onionskin to my collection. This one is 2-17/32 inch in diameter. The weight is 348 grams. I like the color combination very much. So now have 3 of those jumbo's. The biggest is 2-39/64 inch, the second largest is 2-19/32 inch, and this one 2-17/32 inch. As always I look forward to get information about other giant onionskins. Well, I think that someone who is buying marbles on ebay and try to sell them with a provit, must know more than just a little about marbles. Except of course if he will sell them for less money than he bought them.

Ok, JHMO is opinion, sorry, but 10 bubbles in an old handmade marble, that is absolute nothing! I just looked a several other of my old handmade marbles, and they do have more bubbles. This one is one with alsmost the lowest number of bubbles my old handmade marbles have! See this lobed onionskin. How many bubbles can you count? Have a nice day counting ;-) This a subject I disagree with you, but that is the good thing of marble collecting. Dissagreements it is often what makes us learn most from. I forgot to tell that there are old handmade marbles that has some kind of a ghost core that is made up entirely of small air bubbles.

I have seen a lot of difference in faceted pontils. I think that I'llhavethat1is right, that there is a lot of variation. Why making 5,6, 7 facets. if it is possible to give the pontil a good look with only two facets? Some of the bigger marbles I have, have only 2 or 3 larger facets. Others have more small facets. And you say a lot of trapped bubbles? Sorry, but I almost see no bubbles at all! I have seen many old handmade marbles, with lot more bubbles than this one. Those marbles on ebay from the Bulgarian sellers have many many bubbles. This is an example, but I have seen Bulgarian marbles with even more bubbles: http://www.ebay.com/itm/vintage-hand-made-marble-1-mint-GROUND-PONTIL-/321325878689?pt=Marbles&hash=item4ad083cda1 I still think it is an old one, because of its origin from the UK, and it was in a lot with only other old marbles. The pontil looks right to me, and the cold roll line is something seen often at old hand mables. How is that with contemporary marbles? Do they have cold roll lines also? And an other thing. Especially the old single gather handmade marbles (transitionals) and old sulphides, have sometimes very smooth pontils. I think they used very fine grinding. A sign of great craftsmanship. One have to look very carefully to even find the faceted pontil. If I look at your second photo, the blue lutz marble. The pontil I see at the marble right, would immediately make me suspicious, if it had no signature, that there is something wrong with the marble. That pontil does not look right to me. But I must say the marbles you are making are very nice.

Try to sell some? He has almost 500 marbles listed on ebay. Especillay the handmades are pretty good named, so this person know something about marbles. I won't say ignorant in this case.

Yes, totally ruined. And check out his End of Day LUTZ FLOATER! 4-Paneled ONIONSKIN. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-MARBLE-1-1-8-End-of-Day-LUTZ-FLOATER-4-Paneled-ONIONSKIN-Single-Pontil-/360862387373?pt=Marbles&hash=item5405130cad The seller described it as a marble with a finely ground pontil with facets. I though that lutz marble are later type handmades, and don't have ground faceted pontils. But well, it is a bargain, so it is worth the risk ;-)

I was not the high bidder on that solitaire board unfortunately. So this photo was send to me by the auction house, and is the only good one I have.
-
Yes I did, and it does not glow under a blacklight. But lots of old hand mades, swirls and onionskins I have do not glow under a blacklight. Most sulphides glow very strong under a blacklight. I think Swissmarbles (RON) made a post about which and how many marbles glow under blacklight) Jeroen

Very nice marble! Yellow and black is a great combination. Someone told that black is rarer on old handmade marbles (faceted pontils) than on newer ones.

Hi Hansel, You are right, the English solitaire boards have sometimes very unusual marbles. I have seen a few solitaire boards at English auctions last year with very strange marbles on them. See the one attached here. If I remember correctly it is a cheated, shaded? core with mica? The group the marble from this post came form was very large, several hundreds of marbles. A lot of them very common, but several unusual ones. With the help of Jeroen vV I picked out the most interesting. There was another marble like this one, with the same colors, but simpler design. England is still a great country for finding unusual marbles. Not the very big rare onionskins or swirls, but the smaller ones, probably from solitaire boards. Jeroen

yes, that is correct. I am in a Lucky flow lately ;-) And I think I bought a small 11/16 inch lobed onionskin two days ago. What I have heard is that small lobed oniosnkins are very unusual. And I think it has some mica in it too. But the photos were not so good, so it was a gamble.

The dark color is black.
