I heard that from a collector in the USA also. But the facted pontil looks good to me. And there is a cold roll line also. I am wondering if modern marbles have this cold roll lines also. If you consider modern from the last 20 years or so. I think that torch marbles don't have cold roll lines, but I am not expert on that. And it was in a group of old handmade marbles, most of them old with faceted pontils. And it is from the UK. I think there are not so many marble makers in the UK. So I give it the favour for it being a old handmade marble.

No, lightning bolt (strike) marbles don't have facted pontils.

yes, and probably he had only one hand, was spastic and blind too............

In the same group of the unusual ribbon core, was this marble also. It came from the UK. It is a super twisted swirl of some kind. It has a facted pontil also. Especially the photos under water are very nice. In this way it is very good to see how the construction of this marble is. If you take a good look you will see one red band with on each side a very small black line, that is swirling through the core of the marble. The marble is 11/16 inch. In the book end of day marbles from Block, there are one or two photos in the section of joseph coats that are similar. But in this marble the lines are in several layers. JC's has all the lines in one layer as far as I know. And JC's are later marbles, and they don't have faceted pontils. So I am not sure in what category to put it. I look forward to hear your thoughts. Jeroen

Here are better photos of the pontil. Noticed that the area inside the red line has facets too. I think some marks left by a tool have been removed there.

I saw another marble from this seller listed as old vintage, but that is for sure a new marble. Not to be trusted this seller!
-
Yes. Is he a seller with not such a good reputation?

I have put it on the AAM forum also, and they had thoughts about it also. I was in a larger collection of old handmade marbles. Most of them with faceted pontils. It comes from the UK. A good friend of mine (Jeroen vV) who collects old handmade marbles for over 20 years pointed it out for me telling me that this one was something special. The pontil is ok in my opinion. It does not look different than faceted pontils on other marbles I have. The scratch like marks that are probably from the marble scissors are there. It is seen with lots of marbles with a faceted pontils. Those marks are often in a circle around the area that is facted. The folding creat at the top is not so strange. I have a mica panel onionskin with a similar folding crease at the top. And why are there some mica flakes in the marble? I have seen new (fake) mica marbles, and that is a different kind of mica. The mica in this marble look ok to me. And the marble glows under a blacklight. That is often a sign that it is old. Find attached a photo with a slightly better view of the pontil. Well, perhaps there are other collectors with different insights. I think this is a good original one, and probably very rare.

Hi, This one came with the post yesterday. It is a kind of ribbon core. About 7/8 inch. one ribbon is a kind of jelly transparent glass, the other is from many thin black lines. It has some mica in it too. Near the pontil are some small flakes, and opposite of the pontil a few bigger flakes. They can be seen in the lower right photo, and the lower middle photo. It has a facted pontil, and glows under a black light. So what kind of marble is this?

Hi Zaboo, I am not questioning your marble. I think that your is a real one from the same family as the butterfly types. Perhaps Hansel has seen something similar as your marble. I thought that the other on ebay could be a similar kind, and the seller did not know he had something special. Jeroen

Is this one not from the same family? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mint-1-7-8-ONIONSKIN-Antique-Hand-Made-Vintage-Marble-RED-WHITE-and-BLUE-/251449024135?pt=Marbles&hash=item3a8b879e87

Hello, I just bought these two. Any idea in what category they belong? Some kind of coreless super twist swirls, or a kind of joseph coats? Look forward to hear your thoughts. Jeroen -

Hi I'llhavethat1. Very nice and strange marble! Here is an other rare one. I wish it was mine, but it is not........ -
Exactly what I thought too, when I saw the news. Even the clay marbles in the box are very similar to the ones I played with end 70ties early 80ties. But they could be from before 1945. See this link: http://www.knikkerwereld.nl/fotoaardewerk.php. The box with lay marbles look like the ones in the Anne Frank box. But perhaps these kind/similar clay marbles were produced after 1945 also.

Yes, I think so too, and this is the most ugly marble of his collection ;-)! No just kidding........ Jeroen

A new marble for today. One of the best 24 lobed onionskins I have seen. 2-7/16 inch, with very nice symmetry. Not my marble, but I am allowed to post it. Jeroen

Wow, indeed a very nice group Hansel! Those yellow ones are great. Jeroen

Marble for today: a true black core latticino marble, size 7/8 inch. And looks even better under water! Jeroen

What German Hand Mades Are Rare?
jeroen replied to manylittle's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Hi, Your welcome. I only collect old handmade marbles, and I think they are equal beautiful than machine mades. But The machine mades get more attention here on this forum than the hand mades I think. Sometimes a veryrare and nice handmade marble is posted, and it gets only a few reactions. With some machine mades if have seen that there are many reactions. But I think there are more machine made collectors than handmade collectors. Would it be an idea to make a separate section with questions, id's ect for handmades? Even on ebay hand made an machine made marbles have separate sections. Well to contribute to this topic about what handmade marbles are rare. Any onionskin that is over 2-1/2 inch is rare. The photo shows a 2-19/32 inch onionskin with mica. -
