Yes, this this is very informative. Knowledge and ideas being shared. (Good to see you too) You refer to the colour as AV, as in AVenturine? -

Yes, melting points! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 That was what I was reaching for but never got to. Thank you! -
Yes, I get what you mean.

Marbles containing minerals?
Chris Parson replied to Chris Parson's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Thank you for your input @Ric, @Steph and @Alan! I don’t know if it’s even possible to mix, for example, quartz with glass? Some types of quatz also tend to shift colour when exposed to heat. A mineral like citrine also contain iron which may or may not react in a certain way when expised to the hot glass mass…? But I’m just speculating here and my brain is partially disconnected after 9 pm. -
Thank you Ric! I was going as far as thinking that 5 could be Vacor but then again, no.

As I was sorting through my mineral collection a couple of weeks ago, I came to think of a Veiligglass marble of mine that is said to contain green aventurine. That made me question how many companies deliberately used minerals in their marbles. I have noticed that companies like Akro, Christensen and Vitro also had "Agate" in their company name. What do you people know?

I couldn’t let these stay behind as I went to a second hand store the other day. I’m guessing Veiligglass wirepulls and German (machine?) made. I love the ”tongue” on 4 that makes it go ”pa-dack, pa-dack, pa-dack” when it rolls unevenly across my table. Also, the spiral and large air bubble on 2 is beautiful, I think.

As some of you have noticed I've been away from the forum for a couple of months. I had an rising interest for marble collecting but then it sort of faded as other aspects of life became more significant. Did this happen consciously? No, not at all. I am living with an unstable mental health and have been doing so for many years, basically since I was a child. For the the last few months I have been focusing on my own awareness towards maintaining a stable mental health level. It's so much more than just trying to stay positive. It's all about awareness and centering yourself and when I have too much on my mind I have to clear away everything that is not of significance at the moment. Focusing on marble collecting was of less importance and taking a few steps back and recharge a bit was of much greater importance; Sorting marbles when you can't sort your own thoughts is quite difficult. To all of you who have been sending me private messages and asking how I am doing: Thank you for your consideration and your patience. I'll see you around!

I’m working on a very compact ”lightbox” which is simply a small square piece of MDF, with a hole in the middle, that I place on top of a reading lamp. It’s a work in progress but it’s getting there. I think I need to widen the hole just a bit to pass more light. Here are some experimental shots.

It says here that it (if it’s a Red Baron) is identical to a ”red old fashion”. This makes me curious…

Welcome! Portugal is beautiful. Me and my girlfriend went to Lisboa and Cascais in 2019. I'm also a marble collecting beginner. Your lot looks very similar to what you may find in Sweden, where I live. Keep searching and you will learn to recognize different marbles. People here are more that happy to help.

Still, to this day, nobody in Middle Earth knows if Sauron was actually looking or flashing his bottom… -

Yes, like solar flares. I scrambled together som sort of light box and it worked fairly good. For some reason I was also leaning towards Veiligglas when I first saw the marble. I have a white opaque Veiligglas marble with green aventurine in it and I thought of that. As you say, regarding my location, there’s a good chance that it is just that; Veiligglas. -
Sweet! Thank you Steph. Every now and then they appear.
-
What could this be? It was tricky to capture the essence of the marble so I thought that a shinethrough of light could capture the translucence.
-
Would you say that this Veiligglas or just a ”plain” German? It’s quite busy and I try to make sense of the pattern.

I am leaning towards Vacor blue jay: https://www.billes-en-tete.com/detail.php?id=6&lang=en

Very helpful pictures! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Thanks. What do really identify a German striped opaque? And when are we in terms of year of manufacture?
-
Please, elaborate!
-
Thanks, Chad. Let’s focus on number 4, simply because I keep looking at it almost every day. Who else is supporting that it is a German S.O. and who thinks otherwise?
-
Aha! Veneered you say. So basically a thin layer on top of a base? Is this common only for Asians?
-
I haven’t posted in a while but I sorted out some contemporary Asian opaques the other week. Childhood keepers. 😊 I’ve noticed how some, as beautiful as they may be, are of ”lesser” quality than others. The stripes and patterns are very shallow, like they made a solid white marble and… I don’t know… somehow ”painted” the striped pattern onto the surface. I honestly dont know how to describe it but I tried to take a couple of photos on shallow dents that reveal a white spot.
