Shown here with a piece of opalescent cullet and other marbles to get the true colors....The marble exibits blue and orange without any light being applied contrast with other marbles with white in them to compare The marble had been stored high up on a shelf for awhile and was quiet dusty and dirty (helps to see the contour and shape so i didnt clean it) here is a detail.....This sample I believe to be hand gathered as I see an actual tail (very hard to photograph)

So this would be a flint moonie? ----and this would be just a Moonie or a Fire Opal on the left (has lots of fire, but no fisheye)???.....Hangathered Akro or CAC on the right?
-
MOONIE: A semi-translucent, opalescent white or pale light blue hand-gathered, machine-made marble, with an interesting soft luster. Manufactured by The Akro Agate Company and The Christensen Agate Company. Above you will find the Akron Glossary of marble Terminology's definition of a Moonie and after doing some research, I understand Akro made two types of Moonies....the first one I'll talk about is the Flintie: The name given by Akro was "Flinties" which came in several colors...Red, Green, Blue, Red, White and Yellow.....However Its been my understanding that it was collectors that gave the name "Flint Moonie" for the white one .....When these marbles are held to backlighting, they will produce an orange glow....Most Flinties have a small transparent opening in the marble called a "fisheye".. I have only had a handfull of handgathered Moonies where there is a noticeable nine and tail .....The confusion lies in whether they were Akro or CAC ....... Other Moonies claimed to have been made by Akro are extremely opalescent almost like looking at a real opal...most of the time the orange glow on those samples are very apparent without applying any backlighting. I found the majority of these type bubble free and even though some may have noticeable internal action many don’t have any "hand gathered swirling features" whatsoever..... This should get the discussion going pretty good here.....I will kick back for a little while to see what kind of response this gets from other board members....Im very curious what you all think...here are some relevant questions to consider....... -With the exception of the Flint Moonie (White w/fisheye), were both Akro and CAC Moonies supposed to be hand gathered? -Was the name "Flint Moonie" created by the company or collectors? -Does any timeline supporting documentation exist for Akro Moonie production? -Can someone please post detailed pictures of either a CAC or an Akro Agate hand gathered Moonie? ...if you have both, comparison pics please....

Here is my definite score of the year!….a 15/16” Red Vitro Wedding cake!…..caught you guys sleepin……hehehehe…..Here is the link to the auction picture that helped me decide it was a vitro wedding cake. The seller had them listed as Alleys (with one large one). There are still deals to be had on eBAy

Okay ....those are some awesome examples.....give me a few and I'll post what ive got.... I have been on a serious quest for collecting WVS now for the past 4 years....and at the time, I knew that most of the beautiful WVS swirls and flames were "sleepers"....A couple of years ago, it was my understanding that with reference to marbles, the term "calligraphy" referred to a group or designation of Alley Agates (maybe some other WVS's too) flame/swirl marbles that have choppy, thin, long or short swirls that resemble the writing style......thus the name "calligraphy swirl" the name stuck with me ever since Even though not all all Alley flames fit this category, it is my opinion that certain swirls will definitely take on "calligraphy style" accents about them. Below are some extreme examples that I would classify as Calligraphy Swirl/flames (i still have a few more like the one steph pictured above from lmtfi) Here are some other fantastic Alley Flames that I feel don’t fit the bill........can you see the difference?

got thru to live chat yesterday at this time and filed a claim as well..... I believe after I sent this via live chat with their fraud department and they substantiated it, his auctions were no longer permitted: Hi, I am a marble collector who collects HIGH END MARBLES….I bought a marble from a seller who at the time being has the name mikesXXXXXXXXXXXXmarbles The marble I purchased from him is a High end Ravenswood Swirl……here is the completed eBAy transaction# XXXXXXXXXXXXX The problem is that this item and others that this person has sold and have listed right now are in the possession of other collectors. I have tried and so have others, to make contact with the seller and none of us have been contacted back. He has already STOLEN hundreds of dollars by fraudulently listing items that don’t belong to him. The items are High end marbles……. What course of action can I and others take to get our money back?…….He only got $25.00 from me on my auction but got hundreds of dollars on several other auctions…..If you check protocol, I am sure you will find that there have already been complaints pouring in about this seller….. so can’t there be something done about allowing this individual to continue ripping off buyers? I am not someone being vindictive, as I have a list of other eBAyers who have been ripped off by this guy too. Here are some other fraudulent auctions that have already closed that have been CONFIRMED merchandise in other peoples collections:

CHARLES W. PORTER SR. AUGUST 1 1933~~~~~~~~~~~APRIL 2 2010 My father finally lost his battle with Alzheimer and Parkinson’s disease at 9:24am on April 2 2010. He was hospitalized the day before with bouts of throwing up and complaints of chest pains where he made it through the night but never recovered. The good news is that he doesn’t have to suffer anymore and has moved on to a better place. My father got me started with marble collecting about 11 years ago just prior to my retirement from active service military duty (USAF). He had already been a serious collector since before 1985 when he retired from the Los Angeles Wilshire Blvd. VA Hospital as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist. He soon opened an establishment dedicated to marbles and glass called, “Chucks Antiques Marbles and Memorabilia” located in Pasadena, California. The store flourished and was successful for many years with the aide of my mother who diligently contributed and assisted my father in the store’s success. The store is still there but never really opened back up for business after my mothers’ death in 2005. Viewing of the body, which will be held on Sunday the 11th and both the internment and funeral services will be held on Monday the 12th of April 2010 at Rose Hills Memorial in Whittier, California. Cards and floral donations can be sent to 3660 Monterosa Drive, Altadena, California 91001

Does anyone know how much glass was used for a particular run?....The reason I'm asking is because Large chunks of cullet....(some cases 45 pounds) have been sold on eBay on a regular basis (do a search for "cullet" under marbles). Some of these chunks of cullet already have the glass mixed and in some cases the flame pattern already in the glass....I really don't know the whole process by which the marbles were made, but you could figure that if some of the flames were done intentionally, perhaps the glass was placed in the vat in layers to give the flame effect reminiscent of the large pieces of cullet found. Here are some pics of cullet being sold on eBay right now. The first one being the 45lbs specimen......I understand that tanks as well as the nozzles were cleaned to put different colors in between runs and that glass was discarded, but look at the layers of glass in that chunk.....why would they waste that much glass..... I have a theory that perhaps the glass was layered like this on purpose before it reached the nozzles to make flames and other intricate designs.......Anyone care to elaborate?? PS- This seller is from Arkansas and appears to have a lot of Large Cullet pieces that favor Glass used by WVS companies
-
Howcome no one has mentioned the patterns seen on cullet......I have seen large chunks of cullet that have the flame pattern already in the glass....Some of them look like they could have purposely "layered" glass in the vat (or gob feeder) before injecting the glass.....Could some of the more "intricate" ones have been made this way?

Here are two blue and yellow supposed Akro patches, the one on the right looks as if it started to spin but stopped (didnt quite make a complete revolution). And the one on the left appears to have not spun at all but is definitely Akro....whether this was done intentionally or by accident remains a mystery.....

I remember when I bought that marble, it was advertised as a Peltier Pearlized Single Banded Rainbo..... I paid $17.00 for it and thought I had the find of the century!....lol. When the marble came in, It took a while and the help from this board to realize that it was aventurine....Lizzy (ponkochan) pointed out to me that it was a Vitro whitie and stated that most of the green ones are loaded with aventurine...The pics on the auction were totally out of focus and fooled me into thinking it was pearlized.
-
Here are the pics that show the shear mark of the marble a little better The spinning pic was a rush job but you can still get a feel for the marble
-
Dont go anywhere folks....Ive got some pics comming...The vaseline marble does have what looks like the crease shear mark on Rogers link. however, it is smooth on one side and a little rough on the other.....just as soon as I finish the pics, I will post for your viewing pleasure (30min.)
