Venetian Beads ... Age?

Recommended Posts

Thanks Scott, for the info, Im just a color junkie,no marbles were present that day, so I had to make do with some large beads that I know absolute zero about, I thought they would do in a pinch, for some color anyway, the offer is still open for the Brick Lutz Flame, Its a sweet one!! dave b.

So If anyone can clue me in to the age of these it would be great, the glass appears old, Im not a millifiori person, there is debris in the glass, one has a cobalt base, they are both 1 3/8th to colorful to pass up, Ive had them for a few years, the holes have a black residue in them, since I am unaware of how to do multipul downloads, I guess I'll have to do a few posts with different angles, DB.

When I used to collect beads some 20-30 years ago, it was said glass beads with black residue in their perforation had been made in India, where the beads were formed around a bamboo mandrel. Beads made in the Orient had white residue from kaolin coated mandrels. The clay was used as a 'release' in order to easily remove the bead from it's mandrel. Have no idea if that still applies.

Or if any of it is even true??? Bamboo burns at a little over 450F molten glass is probably over 2000F. Don't think a little stick of bamboo would do so well as a mandrel to roll glass on??

Nice thing about beads, is that there is a tremendous amount written about them. No need to speculate.

For example, a cursory search on the internet shows iron mandrels were(are) used in India:

http://www.beadingtimes.com/culture0803.htm

Iron will leave a black residue (as the oxide) in the perforation.

The Chinese used bamboo mandrels, coated with clay,(which sometimes left a white residue).

I like that information best, In hand you would swear they have a little age, and the black residue makes sense, they are both full of it, I had no thoughts of them being antique or vintage, just somewhere older than the 80's Thanks Hansel, I feel much better,so where would we draw the line on Modern?? after 1970?? DB.

Don't know where bead collectors draw the line, or if they even have one.

Actually what I had said earlier, about what I had heard some 20-30 years ago, is wrong.

Beads with black residue in their perforation are indeed made in India, but the black staining is from iron in the mandrel oxidizing to iron oxide, not from burnt bamboo.
