Steph
Wow ... that makes my cheeks pucker like I just bit a lemon ... (but that's good ). What is it?
savage-28
Those are odd colors for a handmade. Weird structure as well! Very interesting.
kbobam
Nice one! Hope it kicks butt! Have to ask one of my 'permanent newbie' questions. If savage-28's observations are correct, both the colors and the pattern are inconsistent with a hand-made. And there aren't any pontils as far as my untrained eye can see. So I'm ass-uming that the large size is what automatically puts it into the hand-made category. If this is the case, I'd like to ask everyone where they'd put the 'threshold'. What's the smallest sized marble that wouldn't even be considered as a possible machine-made? As Bartles & Jaymes used to say, thank you for your support! Steph
It has pontils. Or at least one. It's smoothed out though.
zaboo
it is a faceted ground pontil. (and nicely done) It is what I believe German in origin. and yes i have seen these colors before in handmades. this came from an old collection. Consignor has had for many years. kbobam
Thanks for the responses. I'm hoping that the "(and nicely done)" means that I don't have to feel like a total idiot. For whatever reason, I've always tended toward machine-mades. Although obviously there are ridiculously beautiful hand-mades out there. If anyone's interested, I'd like to put a vote in for a 'Pontils for Dummies' contribution. From the little I've seen about them, I guess I'm wondering: *How they come to be *One versus two *Ground or not *How a particular pontil situation affects 'perceived value' Thanks again! jeroen
Is this one not from the same family? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mint-1-7-8-ONIONSKIN-Antique-Hand-Made-Vintage-Marble-RED-WHITE-and-BLUE-/251449024135?pt=Marbles&hash=item3a8b879e87

savage-28
FWIW, is wasn't implying that it was contemporary, but I'm sure there are doubters. It's just that I've never seen one like this! This is a special marble, which I doubt there are many others like it!
lstmmrbls
Your right Mike. If someoldandsomenew2 has a contemp that is not signed they list it as vintage.

jeroen
Hi Zaboo, I am not questioning your marble. I think that your is a real one from the same family as the butterfly types. Perhaps Hansel has seen something similar as your marble. I thought that the other on ebay could be a similar kind, and the seller did not know he had something special. jeroen
I saw another marble from this seller listed as old vintage, but that is for sure a new marble. Not to be trusted this seller!
wediscount2
This is a fantastic antique marble, and the pontil is clearly shown in the photo at the 8:00 - 8:30 position. Those colors were used in the extremely rare lightning bolt marbles. Ronnie
savage-28
Were the lightning bolts Chinese?
clydetul62
Yes, it's believed that the lightning bolts are Chinese and not german. It doesn't take away from its rarity. It would not surprise if this very unusual marble is a messed up 'bolt.
