Mattshaw1953
Hi all, really quite like these two little ones 0.62"+0.66" What would you call the divided ribbon with latticino?, a tornado perhaps?, it does seem a bit special! The ribbons in both appear similar, any thoughts or pics of similar "tornado" types?
Steph
Interesting. I'm not familiar with the term "tornado" for marbles. I'll get the popcorn and wait with you.
Mattshaw1953
Hi Steph, I'm not sure I've heard the expression before?, it just seems to fit. I'm not sure there's too many of these around?, I could be way off the mark!! Measuring 0.66", it's skilfully made, any input/insight would be great! Cheers. Matt. VTAndrea
I have a CAC American agate that looks exactly like a red tornado.
Mattshaw1953
That's sweet Andrea!!, it's amazing how a piece of glass produced with rotation....can be frozen in time, when cooled...yet still project a certain movement?, almost as if the energy is trapped inside the sphere. ann
I have a few of these types; some don't have the "latticinio" cage, some do. The ones with 2 ribbons can get complicated. But I've never heard them referred to as "tornado." The only ones I know of that are associated with that term are a few (scarce, if not rare) old Germans -- faceted pontil, I think, I'll check at home tonight -- that are generally classified as slags, with all of the white in the interior, quite literally in the shape of a tornado. I don't have one, or a pic of one, but I'll see what I can find . . .
mon
Here is an Akro Tornado...bought in the mid 2000's. It was 1 of 5 known at that time and a 13/16" dug marble. I know it has nothing to do with the nice marble you have shown.....thought some would like to see it any-who!
greg11
nice marble, split ribbon?
orbboy
I would go with End of Cane Caged Split Ribbon (if it has 12 outer bands or inner in this case). Looks like some extra clear got pulled/globbed/spread/smooshed? over the bands and they were forced towards the centre. Cool marble. Here is a fat Tornado

Mattshaw1953
The Akro looks great, as does that "fat tornado"Dave! Hope you're keeping well Dave?, would the marble be quite scarce?
winnie
Don't know what kind of marbles they are "tornado",but some do have that look.

That fat tornado is the type I was referring to. A couple are listed in Bob's "Collecting Early Machine-made Marbles," pp. 22 & 36, if you have that book.. Mattshaw1953
Sadly I don't have that book, I would love to see any pics of similar hand mades to the O/P. I can't seem to find any images online?
orbboy
Like all End of Cane or messed up Handmades there was only X per cane that could have come out. So scarce is a good word for it. I would think that one would sell on looks rather than rarity. It is a looker.
ann
Maybe if Bob drops by he could post a couple tornados if he still has photos . . . Bob? Yoohoo . . .
