A Real Marble Mystery...

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody! Just thought I'd post this real stumper I found earlier today at a nearby antique shop. It appears to be some kind of contemporary hand made marble, but other than that, I really don't know. Any id help is much appreciated! 🙂

I looked all over the marble (very closely) for an artist's signature, but there isn't one. Also, the circular shape at the top of the marble appears to be some kind of smoothed out pontil since it is slightly uneven/raised from the rest of the marble. I couldn't quite get it in the pictures, but the base glass is totally clear (colorless), only the swirls are blue and white.

It’s pretty cool how they started it with a counter clockwise spin and then twisted it with a clockwise spin. Cut it off and then ground the pontil. It’s probably Bural glass. Does the surface glass feel oily🔥

Chad is right on here.
Imho this is a weak attempt at making a marble.
Perhaps someone just is getting into glass making and trying out orbs.
Is it cool?—well it sure is, I love the colors.
I will not lie here and tell you that it is great.
If the maker was proud of his/her work—it would be signed.
Marble—On!!

I’m starting a new thread in General about Contemporary Marbles.

A good idea - now that we have completely hijacked Yasuda Collector's thread. 😜

But do a quick search first because I know several topics have been started in the past, and it's always nice to build on what we already have. It gives us a chance to bring what are often very good posts back to the surface for newer collectors - assuming there aren't too many broken photo links or other unpleasantness.

As for your big art glass marbles, I like them! But I didn't think Marlow Peterson made glass marbles, which is why I asked for a first name and thought they might be polymer.

🤣 Don't worry guys! I absolutely love uncovering/learning new info.

Man! Those Petersons look gorgeous! I can really see the resemblance to the one I bought, except that mine is kinda wonky 🙂.

So was it actually Marlow Peterson who created these guys?
