Backlight.

I remember way back in the day, I think it was Big John Ives (RIP) that had a backlight set-up that he made to show off his transparent and translucent Cairo Novelty marbles at shows - he may have had a couple of them. Each was like 2 ft x 4-6 ft and must have had 800-1,200 holes drilled in it where he set the marbles. As I recall, there were fluorescent lights underneath. You know a lot of Cairos don't have much eye appeal but if you put some light behind them they light right up and look real pretty. And I will tell you, his display was really something to see. Does anyone else here remember this?

Here's a little tribute to Big John and his Cairo marbles . . .

I think many of us have gone through that phase. Your photos of the snakes are just outstanding - absolutely gorgeous!

Thank you! I had fun taking them.
My husband thought I was crazy blocking all the windows in the room and working in pitch black for those photos  🤪🤓

That Pelt looks amazing backlit too! But I see you were able to achieve the backlighting effect in the daylight, very very cool. Was that with an LED flashlight to the back right of the marble? Was it sitting close to the marble?

Yes, that's a powerful LED flashlight up and to the right of the marble with a weaker one coming from behind. I was holding the strong one about 2 ft away from the mib, as I recall. I just move them both around until I get the matrix lit up as best I can.
