these were EVERYWHERE (on ebay) when i started collecting. they always caught my eye but if i saw that pinky-purple, it was a dead giveaway. i used to complain that the lots always looked like they had "something" but turned out to not be "anything". that said, they really are pretty, and i am happy to have several bottles & jars of them.

Do Moonies and Flinties always have fire?
tankgrrl29 replied to Melissa's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
thanks, Ric! if i did know that, i'd forgotten nice resolution to the moonie/flintie conversation!! -
keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. always a good idea (imo) to have examples in hand of look-alikes and other marble you don't collect.

Do Moonies and Flinties always have fire?
tankgrrl29 replied to Melissa's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
i didn't see any info on Alan's Akro page about non-opalescent solid colored marbles. so maybe the intent was that they would all have 'fire' but some just don't light up as much? (speculating here, and thinking back to when i played with glass... i had rods that looked clear, but which turned 'cloudy' with heat. the transformation was not always consistent...) -

From the web archive of MarbleAlan.com http://web.archive.org/web/20030627125058/http://marblealan.com/akro/ FLINT MOONIES AND FIRE OPALS Akro Agate Flint Moonies (referred to by many collectors simply as "moonies") are translucent white marbles composed of opalescent glass, which will glow orangish when held to a light. Flinties are also opalescent, but have colored base glass (brown, yellow, green, red, and blue, in increasing order of rarity); "Fire Opal" is Akro's name to refer to their red Flinties. Akro Agate's opalescent marbles can be distinguished by their small clear "eye," a small circular area of clear glass surrounded by the remaining cloudy matrix. -
RAR, you can have my copy as a get-well present if you PM me where to mail it (in the words of the current leader of the free world, "not a joke, man!)

i would have *guessed* CAC before i saw the size. now i'm all hmmm.... Migbar did find some dug pelts that looked hand gathered. 🤷♀️

i'm with Ric, all of these look Peltier from here. the lighter base is deceiving in that they seem unremarkable at first, but they are much less common than the green base PPPs. probably from around the time the other pukier colors were used (grey, flesh tone, pale orange, pale pinkish...etc) And very cool to have a nice handful of them so you can see the range of variation. the patch with the slight bit of woodiness is nice!

Hi RAR!

i made this diagram a long time ago to show how some Akro patches 'swoop' across the face of the marble and have a little extension (or 'cap') that goes over the 'top'.

just mentioning these on the off-chance the metallic looking marbles could have come from one of these old Mosaic games. https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-marble-mosaic-game-metal-476156717

yep, yep, and yep (nice one, RAR!) "Elite" is a collector name assigned to fancy helmet types of Vitros. They are a sub-type of Tri-lites (Tri-lite being a company name.) Marble Connection comment

gosh this is such sad news. i'll need some time to process it (and move past kicking myself for procrastinating and losing touch with both c&d) before i can post a proper tribute. for now i'll just share a photo that i stole from someone who attended the 2008 WVMCC show. (apologies to whomever it belongs to; i didn't properly tag it.) RIP, my friend ♥

blue would be awesome! i'm fairly sure i've seen some with amber where your green is, Ric. have not heard of a green sunset, myself.

i've always loved these types and scratched my head over them at the same time. i spent my literal last dollar on one i found in a dollar box on my way out of my first marble show. at one point it occurred to me that Pelt Sparklers might be a good fit, but then i imagined the resulting fire storm and decided to just stay in my lane. but seriously - they're different yet predictable enough that they seem (to me) to be in a category of their own. anyone find any in original packaging? i haven't...

Another marble friend lost... De (Delilah) Davis
tankgrrl29 replied to tankgrrl29's topic in Marble Friends Memorial
One of the highlights for me of going to marble shows was getting to see De, one of my oldest "IRL" marble friends. I first met her when she and her then-buddy Cliff would share their room setup. I clicked with De from the get-go. She was so funny and down to earth, and her warmth was contagious. When I started making marbles, I brought along some of my least-sh*tty ones to a show - why, I honestly don't know. I guess just to get some pointers and encouragement. De was awesome - she asked if she could trade me one for one of hers, and I was flabbergasted! That small, sincere gesture spoke to her character. We weren't super close, but we kept up a little bit on Facebook. Even though we didn't interact on a regular basis, De was the kind of friend I was always happy to run into, and one I'll remember with great fondness. -
It is with great sadness that I am sharing news of the passing of De Davis this past Thursday, June 24. She wasn't on the marble boards, but those of us from the Midwest will have fond memories of De from the many marble shows she attended. She was a glass worker who made marbles, buttons, and pendants. I'll share a message that her son posted on Facebook along with a link to her obituary, and then add my own post as a reply. I don't normally post on social media that often. I've tried to move away from it. I normally just watch and see what yall are upto while I'm overseas. Friday, had to say goodbye to my momma, Delilah Davis. As some may know, she had been battling cancer and she put up a damn good fight. She was the strongest woman I have ever met and I hope that someday I'm even half the parent to my children that she was to me. She was a mother, a wife, a sibling, a daughter, a good friend to many but to me she was my lifeline and very best friend. My mother knew all of my deepest darkest secrets and loved me without reservation or judgment. She loved her kids and grandkids, that is a fact. She was also an artist. Not just with her glass and objects that she created with her hands, but also as a musician and a singer. Hell, she was once approached to be a recording artist but turned it down when she found out she was pregnant with me. My mother gave and gave and gave and asked for nothing in return. Her outlook on life was awe inspiring. She touched many lives including my misfit band of friends from school who all called her mom. We, her family and friends, are all going to miss her greatly and the world is definitely diminished without her presence in it. We will simply have to take solace in the fact that somewhere out there, she is watching over us and loving us from afar. Her battles were an inspiration and remind us why we are here. Its the connections to our friends and family that make this life worth living and strive to be better people. On behalf of my family, I thank you for all the messages and memories you have been sharing with us and it makes the loss a little more bearable knowing she had touched so many. My sister will be setting up a gofundme account to help with funeral expenses and I will ofcourse share it later. In these times, I'm aware its hard on everyone. So if you can't spare anything, please continue to share some memories of my momma. Thanks so much. Randy Obituary for Delilah Davis

tankgrrl29 replied to AMarcin's topic in Marble Friends Memorial
My condolences also to family & friends who lost Jim. I never met any of the Davis family, but their contributions to the marble community were never the less appreciated by me. Sorry to hear that the man who inspired it all is gone. -
