Speaking Of Czech Marbles...
tankgrrl29 replied to tankgrrl29's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
"mibs" = shorthand for "marbles" and just to clarify, there *are* older czech marbles. i wasn't previously aware that there were *new* czech marbles until i went hunting down alan's auctions and found that other one i posted. thanks for the link, david. i followed the link in the story to a czech website and was able to decipher the "fotogalerie" looks like they use cat's eyes for playing, but check this out: cool marbles i've never seen before -

check out this auction: Modern Czech mibs on ebay sue, i saw the same auctions you did that alan had. i agree it wasn't all that long ago. i was looking for them and found the above auction. i was very surprised to learn the marbles were new. i wrote to the seller and asked if he/she would mind telling about how they were made. i'll post any reply i get. does anyone here collect these or know much about them? (either vintage or new?)

thanks sue! (no offense, but - they're kinda small now, don'tcha think?)

as for the single cutline, imagine the glass being like toothpaste coming out of the tube. it lands on your brush, usually with two ends (cut lines) but if you start applying it to your toothbrush and, instead of a line, you move the brush or tube so as to make the paste fold back upon itself, you can see how you'd the two "cutlines" very close to each other. with glass, i don't know at what point this happens - or how - but it's the same principle, i think. and it can result in either two seams being very close, or even overlapping each other - such as with a diaperfold. i've heard that peltier had a number of different types of sheers - some pinching like what jeff shows (like nail clippers) and another that had two parts that came toward each other from opposite sides (imagine a pair of scissors taken apart, hold one part in each hand...point each one at the other, bring together, but only come close as you pass by, clipping the marble off along the way) i can easily imagine that this last type could put a Yin-Yang spin on a marble by twisting the pattern as it cut. (miller-schmiller! ) and i'd guess there's a similar explanation involving the sheers for the single-seam marbles. dang, i think we need a youtube demo!!

guy was at my first marble show and at every one i've been to since. he called me 'Kiddo' and was always sticking free marbles in my hand when i wasn't paying attention. i loved that he always had a positive outlook - never got caught up in the b.s. on the boards, even though you knew it upset him when people couldn't just get along. i loved his sense of humor best of all. i remember one time at a show, he had just showed gino biffany a marble he thought was a peltier, but which gino was skeptical about. gino said, "what makes you think that's a peltier?" with a totally straight face, guy said to him, "you just have to know your pelts, gino" mighta been that same show, dennis richardson wanted to meet guy in person after all the fun we had on the marble addicts board. after trick-or-treating finished halloween night, he packed up the kids in the car with blankets and pillows, and drove all the way to decatur from KS. he was only able to catch the last hour or so of the show, but they were thrilled to have made it. guy had the kids on his lap, riding them around on his scooter, and filling their pockets with marbles. always one to invite newbies to his room for some in-hand peltier learnin, guy was truly a marble ambassador. he embodied everything that attracts us to this hobby, and which keeps us interested year after year. guy was a keeper for sure. i'm gonna miss him for a long, long time. ~chris -

i feel the same way, joe. greg posted the email he got from beth and then edited his post. then elizabeth posted the same message from her email over on mental. based on the previous messages, it seems we can probably assume the worst, but as someone said to me in an email: when it comes to death, you want someone to tell you. -

hey JV, it's great to see you again!! you ask a very simple question that has no simple answer. it's like asking a machine made collector, "why do you collect akro and not peltier?" but like sue said, it's what sings to you. this might offend some, but one thing i like about machine mades is that they were much more challenging to learn. seems like you can learn the basics about handmades in a brief conversation. machine mades take much more work, imo, to pick up even the basics. the other thing is that when you're new and have limited funds, you can still get lots of cool machine made marbles in nice condition. this also means you can afford to make mistakes while you're learning. but it comes back to what calls your name. if i had unlimited financial resources, i'd definitely have more handmades in my collection. but i still think my favorite pelts would be treasured more than my favorite handmades. (that said, i'm loving all the pictures you guys are posting!!) oh - one quick request - it helps the page load faster (plus it's less annoying) if you don't quote the photos and entire text from the previous posts. you can just scroll down and click the "fast reply" or "add reply" button. or, if you do need to quote, edit out the stuff that doesn't need to be there before adding your reply. :D ~chris
