  1. The brochure says " Swedish Game" for two - but is spelled as "Helma" and not "Halma" . The Halma game goes back into 1800s and was probably inspiration for chinese checkers game...the set is unfortunately packed away ( I would prefer to display but no room) , i need to see if it shows pieces before made. Don
  2. I was reading the archived article on Chinese Checker Boards and tried to pose there but could not. I had not paid attention to article earlier but reading it made me go back and look at how it was named in a 1933 set of games I bought off Ebay several years ago. This wooden set of games was handmade by a college student from a kit in 1933. I have original documentation with games. The chinese checker game was called "Helma" in this set. Don

  6. In this Ebay lot ending today is an unusual item if soembody is a Marble King collector. The fiber drum container was originally sold by Marble King filled with Marble King marbles in late 1950s . Usual outlet was at gas stations as in good old days they gave away stuff like "let your kid get some marbles if you fill up your tank!" . I was going to go after this but my marbles room is already full, thougt a fellow collector may want it. At one time I had pictures of acontainer with original literature but have lost it. 8. Anybody seen this? I had to get a copy to read. Don An epic tale of redemption and justice set in the rugged back country of West Virginia, M. Glenn Taylor's novel tells the tale of Loyal Ledford, a glass factory worker who returns from World War II to woo and marry his boss's daughter. Still haunted by his experiences overseas, Loyal funnels his restless energy into forming a marble company run out of the remote land belonging to his Native American cousins, the Bonecutters. Though a successful company, The Marrowbone Marble Company find itself caught in a high-tension conflict brought about by the early stirrings of the American Civil Rights Movement. http://www.ebay.com/itm/The-Marrowbone-Marble-Company-A-Novel-Glenn-Taylor-Good-Condition-Book-/310400269355?pt=US_Fiction_Books&hash=item48454c3c2b
  9. Winnie: I have found these in 5/8 th inch and 21/32 inch size and soem in 19/32 inch size. The smallest ones look like newer vintage (1950s?) and have less imprefection marks , the larger ones were all found with 1930s to early 1940s marbles. I don't know who made them.. Don
  10. Pump Valve ball? Maybe was used as check valve part on something but very cool find.. Don
  11. I don't think any Japanese catseyes were in these bags - those are Peltier bananas and other tubes I have seen have Vitro Agates or Marble Kings in them...yes catseyes may have shut down soem factories who could not adapt to new style but big chnage was a change in interest of kids in playing marbles.. Don

  15. Marie: You can go back and look at some old web sites by going to the Wayback Machine: http://archive.org/web/web.php And you can search, I think you could reconstruct what you wanted, may take a while but I played with and can go back to some individual pages from Alan's site if you look around. Just type in www.marblealan.com in the search. The web site was archived many times, you may have issues with some links but check out different archived areas and can usually find information. Don
  16. I remember going into Woolcos- which was a large department store (like a Walmart) owned by Woolworths back in late 1960s and seeing a huge aisle of marbles in bags (thousands of bags). I went back twice and ended up buying about a thousand Allreds (the light brown line swirly type of Allreds and weak colored red patches), cage style catseyes, and clearies. I still have a lot of theose marbles Ron but the colors are not as intense as they made earlier and later in Vitro Agate life... Don

  21. This is a general term used by older collectors for the Akro Agate opaques which can be identified by slit opening made in some which appears to be unique to Akros- see first picture. The early red opaques etc were soemtimes put in boxes labeled as Akro Flinties. Finding a set of this many is unusual...
  22. Got these Akro 3/4 th inch mint flinties on Ebay last week - 40 for $6 ........was sitting around this morning and I suddenly remembered i had purchased a half empty Akro No.2 opaques box last year that I had forgot about - in fact I just bought this set of yellow opaques thinking I could use in future in other boxes. Well I knew it was going to take me sometime to find the right sized opaques for the Akro box in my backstock so I had put it away until I ran across some of them I have put away over the years, but these helped fill the box until then.. Enjoy Don
