Need Opinion On Chipped Marbles
Greatmacscott replied to shotgun's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Think of the love and hate those chipped marble endured, with some even succeeding. Found an article on the 1957 Oregon state marble tournament with this line in it "In the Oregon state championship, Lelian Satterfield, 13, won the state championship using a badly chipped “pete” (shooter)." In that tournament, you couldn't replace your shooter unless the biggest chunk got to be smaller than the target marbles. -
the little black O rings are my stands of choice. The come in a variety of sizes and are hardly noticeable under a marble. you can get a 1oo assorted sizes for about 3 buck

When Boys Played Marbles, Girls Played...
Greatmacscott replied to Greatmacscott's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
I did a presentation a year or so ago for the Concordia KS historical society. I went through the newspaper archives from the 50s and 60s, wrote up a story on the Marbles and Jacks tournaments. I compiled a list of participants from the newspaper which the Historical Society used to contact as many as they could to invite to a home coming weekend. The Historical Society build tables for playing Marbles and Jacks since these folks are in their 60s and 70s. About 60 of them showed up, some rode an a special float in the parade then we went to the historical society to play marbles and jacks. They refused to use the tables and insisted on getting down on the floor to play. Quite a sight and the stories were great. The city marble champions were given VFW marble medals. The jacks champions were give little necklaces. -
I think we should call very marble Fred. If every marble has the same name, then there is no confusion. I got a FRED today.

I ran across a company that make metal wall art. the figures are about 4 foot tall. I asked about making a marble player and the response was they would need to make at least 200 of any form to make it worthwhile. The cost seems reasonable at about $40 per figure. Samples of what they currently offer and the company website are below? http://allmetalartshop.com/collections/other-sports I thought kids playing marbles would be a cute addition to the marble room. Anyone else think it is a cute idea? Scott

The New Topix Marble Cover
Greatmacscott replied to William Marbles's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Is it a magazine or a comic book with a glossy picture on the cover? Topix was a Catholic Youth Magazine/comic book one of which showed Marbles -
Found this old newspaper article and had to laugh (not at the kid that did it) But at the thought that we as adults have all tried reaching for marbles that we shouldn't have. from Ironwood MI Daily Globe April 9 1949

Found this in a Sport's Illustrated article, "The Honest Wrestler", July 30, 1956. "...When he wasn't refereeing or defending his wrestling and crowbar-throwing championships, Lincoln played a game that seems incongruous for a man of his size and strength—marbles. But like everything he attempted, he did it better than anyone else. While Lincoln played marbles with the youngsters in the New Salem area, he also shone against men. In those days marbles were popular with all ages. The game was played on a square marked off on the ground with a stick. Lines were drawn diagonally across the square, connecting its corners, a small marble placed at each corner and a larger one (Old Boler) put at the spot in the center where the lines intersected. From the taw line, at a previously agreed-upon distance from the square, Lincoln could hit Old Boler with his taw (shooter) four times out of five. The marbles used were irregular, homemade ones fashioned from rounds of clay and baked in the embers of a fireplace. Sometimes a bullet mold was used to shape the marbles; otherwise the clay was rolled between the hands. Once, after he had become President and was burdened with worries about the Civil War, Lincoln found relaxation in a makeshift game of marbles. He was walking toward Army headquarters in Washington with a telegraph clerk and one of his sons. Picking up a smooth round stone from the street, he challenged them to a contest of shooting stones ahead, marble fashion, to see who could get his stone to the headquarters steps in the least number of shots. When they reached the steps, Lincoln had won and had found in a simple game a respite from Presidential pressures." I predict a new sales pitch for ebayers, "Lincoln's Marbles, recently unearthed at an archeology site near Springfield, Illinois"

I have some Squarbles. They were square marbles sold in the late 70s, made in China. They came on a bubble pack with a shooter things to push them across the carpet in a marble like game. Squarbles.
