Lynn Christian - One Of The Good Guys
Greatmacscott replied to Hipocritter's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
Lynn was one of the great folks that you looked forward to visiting with at the marble shows. He made everyone's life better for knowing him and his marbles. His suffering is over and he is showing marbles to angels in heaven. Scott McBride -

My wife is from the pearl button capital, Muscatine Iowa: http://muscatinehistory.org/pearl_button_industry.html It is an interesting story. The button factories were a lot like the early marble factories, swapping machines and employees between each other. -

I have it in hand and the seller must have one heck of a magnifying lens because it looks better in hand than the picture. I pulled out the big magnifying glass and can see any fractures around the figure. I had a couple of folks here look at it and they think it is old. It goes in the collection and when my kids have the marble garage sale after I have departed this earth, the new owner can decide what they want it to be.

Starting A Marble Club
Greatmacscott replied to richsantaclaus's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
We have four meetings a year, not counting our show. Scheduled for 2 hours; 15 minutes for club business, 15 minutes for a presentation (if someone vlolunteers). Presentations have ranged from identifying hand made marbles, the difference between machine mades, how to play marbles, the difference between steelies and ball bearings, collectable uses of marbles, etc. It does require a willing membership. The rest for looking at marbles, swapping stories and lies, and visiting with old and new friends. At our last meeting, we had a spirited discussion our Mega Marbles. The last two years, we have held our January meeting at the Toy and Miniature Museum. The Museum promotes a marble identification day to the local press and their membership rolls. We have looked at "Grandpa's marbles" to "I found these marbles in my garden". Since the museum promotes it, it goes out to more than just the marble collecting community. We are doing it again next Saturday/ We don't know what the turn out will be but it is another opportunity to promote our upcoming show. We also do one of the meeting at Moon Marble Company so we can watch Bruce make marbles. The other two meetings vary by location. We try to move them around the city to make them accessible to folks who may not want to make the "hour" drive to every meeting. We had had them in community centers, Libraries and park pavilions. Like marble collecting, if you are forming a club, have fun with it and develop a thick skinn because your can't please all the people all of the time. -
Ok, The marble is in hand. I think it could be old but not 100% sure since I don;t have any other older colored sulphide to compare it to. Short of letting Rich heat it up and zap it with the torch, what suggestions do you have for determining age and authenticity?

I got a similar message to lstmmrbles's message from from CallBob. I was not attacking his choice of marbles. If you like what you bought, don't be a fanny about it. Everyone has opionins and as my father used to say, optinions are like (_._) everyone has one and most of them stink.
-
Someone seems a little touchy about the purchase. If you are satified be happy.
-
How about an opion on ebay listing 281028289522 - colored figure. Surface is rough and the glass is clear but looks old. thoughts please? the same seller has a painted dog listed.

Simple Way To Vote? With Marbles!
Greatmacscott replied to spara50's topic in General Marble & Glass Chat
they place the marbles in a chute that goes into a barrel. there is a bell down the chute that rings to signify a vote cast and to prevent one person from dropping more than one marble. Each candidate has their own barrel and since many are illiterate the candidates picture in on their barrel. -
We advertise to the public the hours of the show. I expect vendors to stay reasonably close to closing time as a courtesy to the public. I have refused to sign someone up when they have repeatedly left a show early.

Run away, fast! Looks like a fantasy bag to me. -
Rich's book is a good reference for new collectors. He has used lots of resources as references. I am primarily a handmade collect and I learned a few things about machine mades when I read it. I will stay with the hand mades :-)
